the knife scene
For me that is the most harrowing thing I have seen in the cinema

The whole film is intensely moving, I was in the cinema with my sister and her friends, they all (gently) took the piss when I was crying at the end, until they caught sight of the veterans in the audience also crying.

Definitely, it was hard to watch.

I'm with you there. One of the few films which still threaten the waterworks for me. (And I don't mean pissing myself.) o/t I watched it with a girl I rather liked and she was quite taken by the chap who got knifed, she was not a fan of that scene!
For me SPR is ruined by the extremely poor characterisation - they're just so two dimensional and contrived. They tick off all the war film character stereotypes, which spoils the film for me.
It's a shame because the beach scene is truly epic and harrowing, but the film then descends into a very predictable story. Without the special effects it would be a pretty poor film IMO.

It is a great film and one of my favourites but very annoying that they got some basic facts very very wrong which does slightly spoil it for me. I don't say that as a WW2 nerd getting picky about the stitching on the uniforms or other such nonsense but just as someone with a slightly greater interest than most which possibly makes it worse as the mistakes were real schoolboy ones and the historical advisor should have done better.

I could be wrong BUT I think they had a number of the guys who stormed the beaches and a number of germans who defended the beaches giving them historical advice..........Jasandjules said:

The wooden beach obstacles are positioned the wrong way. They are pointing out to sea when they were in fact pointing towards the beach. This is because the Germans expected a landing to occur at high tide so the obstacles would therefore be hidden underwater with a mine sitting on the top which was designed to take out landing craft.
The call and response password that all the allies used to identify themselves to each other was flash/thunder. In the film it was thunder/flash.
In the film it looked like there was only a couple of hundred yards of beach to get up when in fact, due to the landings being at low tide, it was substantially more. I am happy to overlook this one as I'm sure there was some artistic license employed due to the amount of extras that would be needed to fill up that amount of space and still convey the sense of terror that the film succesfully achieved. The other two however were just sloppy and there is no excuse to get such basic things wrong.
