.. apparently the 335i tourings roof rack won't take the weight of a bike rack - does anyone know how to remove (then refit) the spoiler? Is it a nightmare or more of a plug n' play?

thanks for your help,

Eh?? DO you mean the roof rails, or a specific bike rack attached to those roof rails??

(i've had an easy 40kg+ on my roof rails without any deformation etc??)
(would have to go find the handbook to find out what the bmw limit is set at, For most cars it's in the order of 60-70kg max)

Sorry, appear to have written an amount of gibberish there..

Basically I'm looking at bike racks that 'hang' over the tailgate.

http://www.thule.com/en-GB/GB/Products/BikeCarrier...

the problem is, the roof spoiler obstructs the staps / clips that go over the top of the tailgate.
in some cars, you can attach over the spoiler and onto the top of the boot lid but in the 335i, the spoiler's not designed to take the weight...

if I could remove the spoiler easily, this would enable me to hang the rack directly over the top of the tailgate (ie where it's hinged)... is this an option?

cheers,
UV

I attach the upper rack straps to the rear of the roof rails on my E91, and put the rack high enough that the straps do not make contact with the rear spoiler. This works well, but I only use it for small kids bikes and put adult bikes on the roof bars.

We had a cycle rack with 2 adult bikes on the roof of our 320d touring over the summer, and were joined in France by another friend with 3 bikes on the roof of his. We bought roof bars & cycle holders by Cruze who are apparently the Spanish distributor of Thule (cheap copy in other words)

Very easy, worked great - just remember the bikes are on the roof and don't drive into a height restriction at entrance to a French car park (not my finest hour...)
