Jeep Transmission problem help please.

Evening,
I borrowed the wife's yr 2000 4.0 Grand Cherokee today always breaks when you borrow something!!
this morning when taking everything and the kitchen sink to the beach (not heavy tho) here's what happened.
Car has done 40K and has always been serviced.
Timeline:
Start the car notice engine management light has come on ?
Get out check the oil / water / trans fluid levels (in park running) no issues?
re-start the car problem still highlighted although everything running fine no miss no odd noises.
I decide the problem must be minor car drives fine 10 miles to beach all the time checking oil pressure and temp which are normal.
when leaving car park blighter won't shift into any other gears than 1st and reverse even in manual mode.
Any ideas I can only think the filters need changing and an oil change in the box but I'm open to any other suggestions.
Many thanks in advance and yes I know I shouldn't have gone out but when your all loaded with 2 x toddlers and a dog and no other transport at home I made the call. Guys with kids will understand.
