I'm considering getting a 2nd set of wheels with winter tyres for Becs' Golf - she's running 225/40/18 sized Eagle F1As at the moment, which I fear may be a little too 'summery' for our likely winter.

Now the VW recommended 'winter tyre size' is 205/55/16, but (a) I'm struggling to find any 2nd hand 16" VAG (so correct offset) wheels that look will any good on the Golf for not a lot of money (can get genuine 17" Monzas for £300 or so), and (b) there tend to be more tyres available for 17" wheels.

But the one tyre-size website I've found suggests the maximum rim-width for a 205-width tyre is 7J, not 7.5J. Can anyone confirm/deny this - don't want to stretch the tyres on the rim as this will defeat part of the benefit of fitting the higher-profile tyres.

Thanks,

Martin.

PS - I know winter tyres is an old topic, and I'm in the progress of reading about 20 threads, but what are the best winter-tyre brands - or is a mid-range Kumho going to be good enough

PPS - alternative is to just get the summer tyres swapped-over and find winter tyres in 225/40/18 or similar (18 x 8J wheels). Winter tyres in a 40-profile?!?

Yep, 205's will be stretched on a 7.5" wheel.

Vredestein Wintrac extreme seems to be the best about although I'm hearing good reports on the Hankook W300 Ice Bear

Yeah I have 205 on my 7J rims. Would definitely be stretched with that extra half an inch.
