Hello,

I've sold my Audi S4 Avant as we need something more economical to run down to Cornwall in since the family have moved down there. Looking at the Volvo V50 2.0 diesel, economical, will tow my boat, looks good, within budget and is an estate (good for filling the boot up with camping stuff and will be able to use my existing roof bars and cycle carriers etc. on the roof bars) I appreciate it's a very small estate but that suits me as it's just my girlfriend and I (no little ones) and I'd rather have a smaller car - easier for her to park!

So, I'm looking at the cheaper models of around £6,000 - £7,000 and I'm not sure whether to opt for a lower mileage car lower spec car, or a higher mileage higher spec car. I'd like cruise control, not too fussed about any other options really.

So, I'm looking at a 60,000 mile S or SE spec car for £6,000 or under, or a 100,000+ miles SE Sport or Sport for closer to £6,500 - £7,000. I really like the look of the Sport and SE Sport, much more so than the standard S or SE, but I'm trying to justify the premium they carry. What are your thoughts on depreciation? Which would depreciate quicker?

Any thoughts welcome.

Thanks,

Dan

For me personaly it would be higher Spec Higher Miles - I am not put off by high miles and in many cases would prefer a car that has been used on long journeys than one that has been in lost of stop start journeys with a low mileage

After a year of owning the car, it'll certainly have more miles on it but it's unlikely to have spawned leather seats and climate control.

Go for the higher spec in the first instance.

That is true. Seen a lovely black 55 plate V50 SE Sport with 91k on. I am very tempted.

Justify it by giving yourself some creature comforts and the car you like the look of best...

Its a big outlay so ask yourself whether you will buy an S/SE and spending rest of time thinking should I - or just buy the Sport from the off biggrin

That being said that sport does ride quite hard if its got the bigger wheels. However Leather is nice to have and the upgraded sound makes a nice difference.

Nicely summed up.

I'm not worried about a hard ride, I've just sold an S4 with 19" wheels and coilovers. That was a hard ride!

Shouldnt be a problem then!

Depending what age it is make sure and check about the DPF refill. Now I could be talking pooh but I can remember some fairly high service bills around 70k relating to the emissions gubbins.

I think it changed in later models and may only relate to quite early ones.

Otherwise I like the V50, drives nice, i'm on my 3rd V70!

It really depends how fast you're going to rack up the mileage. It might take you ten years to get to 200K, it might take you four.

As the age and mileage go up so will the maintenance, not particularly the engine but shock absorbers, bushes, springs, clutch and so on.

So a higher spec, lower mileage car might not be any more expensive in the long run than one with the same spec and higher mileage.

Remember half the reason cars depreciate is because they eventually wear out.

Particulate filter - I cant find anything on google now so may have been my imagination, but I am pretty sure the 70k service stood out for some reason.

Thanks for pointing this out. I've seen on a Volvo forum after a quick Google that the DPF needs to be changed and additives added to the tank at 72,000 miles and at a cost of around £400. In that case, might be better to get the higher mileage one which would have had this already done.

It's also only on the Euro 4 engine as well apparently. I don't know if there are other 2.0 diesel engines prior to this.

Just how important are the toys and what is the cost of retro fitting the most important ones?

What's your annual mileage and what type of mileage is it?

History of a particular car & likely lifespan?

Toys aren't particularly important as the SE comes pretty well loaded, I suppose I just much prefer the look of the Sport. I think it looks great.

Mileage will be low as I only work 5 miles away from my house, but it's the regular trips down to Cornwall that are expensive to see the OH's parents (400 miles) which we're doing regularly, and also up to London (200 miles) to see the rest of her family. We often tow our boat down to Cornwall too. That cost over £150 to do in the Audi! Difficult to say how many miles I'll be doing as I expect we'll be using the car a lot more than the Audi as it will be cheaper to run. Possibly 10,000 a year? Only managed about 8,000 in my S4 in a year, but we only went to Cornwall twice as they've only just moved down there.

Don't expect we'll keep the car longer than a year. We'll sell the boat next year and buy an RS6 or similar and a diesel hatch as the runaround.

Higher spec! If your considering higher spec now you will only regret it if you don't opt for it, just think about how you will feel in years time when you see a higher spec model when your driving your bogger!

IMHO, all I can see looks wise is the wheels and the side skirts. I'm guessing that few would register the latter and as for the wheels, can you pick them up from Fleabay and what can you sell the SE wheels for?
If you're keeping the car for only a year or so, I'd feel more confident about moving on the lower miles one (rightly or wrongly).

Mileage doesn't sound like it's an issue - I wish I did 10k a year frown

Decent set of wheels might make the SE look a bit better, yes. I'm going to look at a Sport SE this week, I'll decide from there.
