Hey all...

So I've saved and saved and can finally be serious about actually buying my all time fav biggrin . I'm looking at a few 2005 plate M5's. Never owned a BMW let alone something this serious so would love to get some thoughts from you guys.

Something of that age has taken the majority of its depreciation but with petrol only going skywards do you think they are bound to take another hit?

The cars I’m looking at have over 60k miles, I’ve always thought with a car of this standard I shouldn’t be too concerned with mileage, what are your views?

I was very pleased to see I could get one with the SMG option, bit of a gimmick or should I go for one of these?

I aim to find one that’s been well looked after with plenty of history, but anything else I should be concerned about/look out for?

Thanks in advance !

I assume you are thinking of the E60 V10. To my knowledge they were all SMG only, so no manual or full auto option.
I have a 2006 M6 since new, (same mechanically).
My experience:
Mechanically reliable, occasional problems with electronics. Had ECE replaced under warranty. Other than that it has been pretty bulletproof.
Fuel consumption is pretty awful if you are doing a lot of city driving, and the fuel tank's too small.
The engine is one of the greatest ever built by BMW, high-revving, magnificent in full song; I am OK with the SMG and once you get used to it you can shift perfectly smoothly, though its rubbish in auto mode.
Overall, its a great car with controversial styling, and I think it will depreciate a bit further, but,,its a blast.

Thanks for that RDMcG, yea I'm looking at the E60, I've always liked M5's from their shape, sound, interior...

I've seen a few 2005 models but there not all SMG (or at least not listed as SMG). I'm going to book a few test drives but I know before I even step into one my heart is going to do the thinking leaving my head behind!

I won't be driving it much other than on weekends, so not too fussed about petrol. Road tax will hurt but that’s once a year so I can live with that. How do you find servicing and general maintenance costs? I would prob use an BMW specialist as opposed to a BMW Dealer.

Had no particular problem..service intervals are fairly long. You might want to try the M5 board for lots of owner experience..........

Unless they are a US import LHD car - then you might get one with an manual box. But the engine is designed to work with the SMG transmission so the manual is well.. erm.. a bit ste
