OK - The wife's not got a clue what to replace her Xantia with, so I thought I'd risk asking here...

Some constraints.

Under 40K miles.
Must be FWD or 4WD.
Must be a normal saloon/hatch/estate style car, not a people carrier or what the Americans call an SUV - 4 or more doors would be good.
Must be reasonable to drive (probably not an out and out sports model though)
Must be able to average 35MPG or more
Must sit 5 adults with room for 3 big suitcases (space for skis would be good)
Budget around £8K

We've already discounted Focuses and the upright Megane and will ignore recommendations for anything from Toyota.

Think that covers it smile

Is there something obvious?

I would have thought that a Mondeo was the obvious choice?

Maybe an Octavia?

At least you're being realisticrofl

So you want something big enough to take 5 adults to the Alps with kit but isn't an MPV, but that'll do 35mpg average, is half decent to drive and 3ish years old (under 40k miles).

For £8k....

Unless it's Korean I suspect you have two hopes (And Bob's left).

A Mondeo seems perfect if the mileage can be stretched.

Well, if anything's going to stretch, it'd be the budget, but I've seen the way these things go - Someone's suggesting you buy an M5 within 3 posts! biggrin

I suspect you're both right about the Mondeo (I like the Octavia option, too, having had one).

She seems to have ruled out the Ford Galaxy so any decent estate car should cover the ground. Lots of competent ones out there. Why on earth would anyone rule out RWD?

It's all a quesion of "size" at the end of the day. Mondeo and E-class are humungous. Cars like 3-series, C-class or Mazda 6 are more normal.

I've always had a soft spot for the current Mazda 6 estate.

We're only excluding RWD because the RX8's a challenge to get out off our road if it snows, so we want one car that will be drivable in such conditions.

It's possible most RWD saloons would be ok, but there's plenty of choice that's FWD or AWD, so we'll discount it for now (A Merc or BMW will realistically be too expensive anyway, which doesn't leave many alternatives).

PS Accord's a good option - Hadn't thought of that...

Jaguar X-Type 2.0d or 2.2d estate? Petrol V6 one will likely be AWD too.

Having slated them in the past you should also have a look at an S-Max, my SWMBO likes it because it doesn't feel much bigger than her Focus. Internally it's vast while it's actually shorter than the Mondeo estate IIRC.

The ride's harsh around town and the seats are too firm but it's actually very nice to drive.

Audi TDi, maybe a quattro for the 4wd, A4 or A6 depending on the size you need.

Yeah they're alright, the automatic gearbox is woeful though, and the 2.2 petrol is VERY thirsty.

Fair enough.

Who the fk buys a diesel estate, to do 5000 miles per year?

Muppets.
People who enjoy driving a lazy engine but don't want a thirsty Petrol 8 or 6 cylinder lump.

HTH.

I think for 8k there's not much of a premium for buying Diesel either.

Also people who like the warm glow of the DPF light, and the smell of service department instant coffee.

Just come from a Mondeo ST TDCI to a Octy vRS estate and the Octy is by far the better car from what I've seen so far. Paid well under your budget too for an 06 plate on just under 60k.
