Insurance woes.
Discussion
Recently had the renewal in for the evo and as usual had a search around for a better quote than provided.
I found a competitive quote that was around £150 cheaper and thought that rather than ping pong between the two companies playing them off against each other, I would just take out a new policy with the cheaper of the two.
Queue the usual barrage of paperwork pertaining to documents etc and provided evidence of the substantial NCD accrued over the years (14).
Got that sinking feeling when a week later a letter was received stating that NCD proof had not been received , followed a few days later saying that the document had now been received but was for a different car and was for a few months ago.
This was the renewal I had received for my daily driver ( vectra) earlier this year.
It also stated that I neeeded to provide a V5 document or receipt for the evo if it was a recently purchased car.
Failing to do so would result in the termination of insurance in 7 days time.
So today phoned them to explain that I sent them my renewal for my car that shows my total NCD as the evo was insured through a broker last year and all I received from them was a letter stating that my evo insurance was due for and to give them a call if required to renew.
They asked if I still have the Vectra to which I replied yes, which then led to the immediate cancellation of my evo insurance as I cant use my current no claims for another car.
Thankfully I'm at home on a day off today and didn't call them from work on my break, as I would have been in a very tricky position, seeing as I have an hours drive to and from work.
How is it logical that a person can spend years building NCD and have it discarded as it has been earned on another vehicle. Surely the premium paid reflects the risk based on the information given at the time of application.
I was asked if I had applied online and I had . It was stated to me that there is a question on their application form that asks if your NCD has been earned on a currently insured car, to which I stated there certainly wasnt at the time of my application, and that I would also check again to be sure.
Sure enough, all the way through the application, right up to the point of paying the premium there is not a single mention of this.
I was told though that I wont be charged a cancellation fee, but I waiting to see just how much of my initial deposit and last two months payments will be kept from the refund they said I will get.
My concern now is do I have to declare on insrance applications that I've had insurance cancelled , as I believe this leads to a hefty premium weighting being applied.

It is a fairly basic tenet of car insurance that NCB is attached to the car and policyholder combination. If you get rid of a car and replace it, fair enough the NCB can be transferred to the new one, but if you buy an additional car your NCB for that vehicle starts again at zero.
Some companies will match NCD across onto a new policy when you get a second car for the first time. Aplan did this for me on my mx5. But I thought it was common knowledge that you can't use one 'earning' of NCB on 2 cars - after all if you had a prang in one car, you'd still have your full NCB on the other!

Yeah I can understand the whole prang one car and continue driving the other. However you are still obliged to inform any insurer any changes that will affect your risk .
The main irk that I have is that you earn NCD through the years irrespective of what you drive. That would be in my mind why cars have different insurance categories though, as they represent different levels of risk, and you are charged accordingly.
Just because you have two cars and can pick and choose which car you are taking to work that day, your driving skill set doesn't change.
I will as suggested call my previous broker and renew my insurance with them and chalk this one down to experience.
Cheers for the input so far, and I know that there's nothing I can do to change the circumstances, but just thought I'd vent and maybe highlight the fact to other drivers that like me weren't aware that this can happen.
Googling around shows however that some companies are happy to mirror your NCD , just be sure to double check as I will be doing in future,

^ this, sure you should have got more than just a letter asking about renewal.Just call the old copmpany back and say can you renew.
How much no claims do you have on this car?
Attatched was a reply slip with yes/no options and payment method preferred.
