Touareg or Rangie Sport?
Discussion
Folks,
What's the general opinion on these vs. each other?
We've considered a FFRR, but it will be for my wife & she doesn't want to lug around such a big car all the time, so the Sport or Touareg seem like the ideal size. Before anyone starts, we live in the sticks, so a 4x4 is most useful (plus there are a few green lanes near us, whichwe I use occasionally).
We are looking at either:
Touareg 3.0 TDI V6 (I looked at the 5.0 V10 TDI, but it just doesn't seem worth it for the kind of of driving she normally does)
or
Rangy Sport 2.7 TD6 (I looked at the 4.2S, but it's just too damn thirsty for her commute to work)
I had considered a Disco 3, but depite sharing the floorpan of the RRS, they are a bit massive! She doesn't like the Audi Q7 & neither do I.
Can anyone give any pointers as to which is the better car?

O/T: It makes me sad that this kind of phrase is necesarry on PH these days. This should be the ONE place we can be proud of driving what we like without fear of rebuke. Back on topic, my mate has the touareg diesel and loves it.
I've driver a RRS on a few occasions and was fairly impressed with that too.
Sorry the above isn't much use to you, but I doubt you'd be unhappy in either.

Is an RRS truly any smaller or lighter than a RR??? What's the general opinion on these vs. each other?

I'm a Landy man, but I admit I do quite like the Touareg, although 5.0 V10 would be my only real interest. Porsche Cayanne is probably also worth a look as it's related to the Touareg.
My personal favs of this size of 4x4 are the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara for a proper 4x4 and the funky and very cool Toyota FJ Cruiser.
I've not driven a Toureg, but have heard some horror stories about timing chain stretch on the V6 TDI engine, this requires engine/gearbox/front subframe removal, and is potentially a very big repair bill
As others have said, I can't really see that there is that much difference in size between a RRS and FFRR, both are pretty big cars TBH.
I've driven both the RRS and the Disco 3 - Of the two, I'd take the Disco 3 over the RRS, it drives better, and is far more practical/spacious than the RRS, which despite it's size, isn't that roomy

In your dreams - I can see no problem whatsoever at drawing attention to the shortcomings of vehicles!Drove behind an RR "sport" (ho! ho!) yesterday. As it towered above me it was plain to see that this wonder of off-road engineering had about the same ground clearance as my car and road tyres which would spin just as easily if it went anywhere near a patch of mud. Joke city.
IMO either of these vehicles is easily outclassed on the road to PHness by vehicles costing a fraction of the price and far better suited to real life.
All IMO of course....

I've had both.
Found the VW wheel arches make the car wider than you first appreciate. Good cars and drive well. No issues but there were concerns about their ability to eat tyres. Had no problem with mine.
The only issue that I had with my RR Sport 2.7 was the turbo lag that always kicked in when you didn't want it to. Very pleased with it generally and no problems there either. I preferred the Sport to the Touareg - personally. If you get one ofr these, try to go for the 3.0 litre one.
Have been on off-road days with both and you would be surprised at just what they are both capable off.
Go for a decent test ride in both and see which she prefers.

In your dreams - I can see no problem whatsoever at drawing attention to the shortcomings of vehicles! My issue is people making snap judgements that another PH'er shouldn't be buying a certain type of vehicle. The fact a PH'er wants to buy a certain vehicle should be enough. (whether they'll use it to its full capacity, or for the purpose designed, is neither here nor there).
What I'm saying is a PH'er shouldn't have to justify his/her choice of vehicle.

What other PH cars would you recommend that fulfil the following criteria, because I am damned if I can think of anything else?:
- No more than 4 years old
- 4WD
- Able to be driven over tracks / greenlanes occasionally, so needs higher than average ground clearance
- Has a reasonable turn of speed (ie 0 - 60 in sub 10 seconds (pref 9ish), will cruise comfortably at 90ish)
- Leather, aircon, SatNav, Cruise etc
- £23k budget, so looking at advertised prices of up to £27k
- Doesn't drink like a fish
S4's are ruled out. She used to have a V8 Avant, which she loved, but doesn't want another one
X5's are out. She doesn't like the look of them
A6 Allroad's are out. They are neither mount nor summit
Subaru's are out. She used to have an Impreza WRX & whilst she liked it, she doesn't want another Subaru
Ford Kuga's are out. She doesn't like them
Nissan Patrol's are out. She says they are too big
Toyota Land Cruisers are out. She says they are too big
Toyota RAV4's are out. She had one years ago & didn't like it
Merc ML's are out. They are badly built
Cayenne's are out. She thinks they are ugly
So, I challenge you. Find me a car that fulfills her criteria, but has not already been ruled out........
Reconsider the LR Disco3?

Forgot to say:
XC70's are out. For the same reason as the A6 Allroad. Not enough ground clearance
XC90's are out. She just doesnt like them
Grand Cherokee's are out. She thinks they are too tacky inside
That Disco looks reasonable value on the face of it, but reading the ad, it has cloth seats, no satnav, basic spec. It will define the word depreciation in a year or so. To retain any kind of value on these cars, it is imperative to buy the highest possible spec you can, as people like their toys. I remember when I sold my Rangie, a number of people knocked it back because it didn't have rear DVD's. Fair enough, I thought. However, the car that I presently own happened to have read DVD'd fitted & my son (who is 7) has watched a DVD on them a sum total of once - on the way back from the dealer. They are pointless, but people love crap like that in these big cars.
I do keep coming back to Disco's, but her main concern is just that it "feels" so big
I have mentioned the Freelander to her & that might get some traction, although I had a new one as a courtesy car a year or 2 ago from Land Rover when my FFRR was getting its front diff replaced & she wasn't that enamoured with it

Volvo XC 60, not a car like the XC70, and not as big as the XC90 and the Disco etc. Good image, very well packaged car and based on the Mondeo floor pan so bigger than the KUGA etc that most compare it with.
Available with the very good 180ps D5 motor that will run until hell freezes over if the mileages on S60 and V70s are right.
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2010... and on budget before haggling. (that one is a 163ps engine but you get the idea)
