i THINBadge Snobbery - Educate me.
Discussion
Following on from the threat about the Vauxhall Insignia VXR.
I ould love one, but I think I have turned into a badgle snob. I don't exactly drive premium brands myuself but there you go.
its what puts me off the VXR. A fantastic motor which just might solve most of my motoring needs. But after a couple of years, a Vauxhall (and Fords) tend to tumble down the social scale. They become taxis or fall into the hands ochavs.
One of the cars I enjoyed most was my brand new 2006 Astra Sports Hatch. Fantastic motor - I was too small for our needs so it went after 18 months. But now I see these great cars screeching up and down the sea front near me. The nice factory 18 inch wheels have either been swapped for tat or painted black.
Its putting mke off the brand.
Back ass a kid I loved Vauxhalls. Neighbours and relatives had to me big posh Cavliers, Carltons and Royales. I thought the MK Astra GTE was amazing.
Vauxhall used to also sell as Opel for its German built cars like the Monza and Manta.
For some reason I'd not have a problem with an Opel.
Strangely enough, I don't like the image of BMW and Audi - but I would have no problem with a high-spec Skoda.
But given the choice between an Insignia VXR and say and XF diesel - I'd be much more confortable with the Jag.
So, a confused badge snob. Educate/persuade me.

Why is Opel any better? It's more or less the same car? IIRC for a while the Vauxhall and Opel Vectras ran different suspension setups and you really didn't want the Opel version. The early Vectras all ran Opel configured which is what gave them their reputation; the brochures latter on made a big thing of having the suspension tuned in the UK.
BTW Firefox and Chrome have built in dictionaries.

Most people here on PH are badge snobs TBH.
I can't give a toss about most badges. I'm having a bit of trouble with BMW though. If only they'd put Triumph badges on some of their cars I'd probably buy one.But that's more to do with the ownership profile than the badge.
Initially I was temped by the VXR Astra when it first came as it evoked memories of some epic times I had in a GTE 16v from my early driving years! I decided not to buy one due to the badge. However the badge is synonymous with severe depreciation and for me is at the root of my reluctance to purchase on as I hate losing money!
The Chav b
ds affect most performance cars to some extent. I mean look at the E46 M3 - great car and always will be; however they are now in reach of the older Chavs and subsequently a lot get thrashed and ruined with tacky 'mods'
That said I have seen some spectacularly awful new, expensive cars completely ruined by people thinking matt black wraps on their 997 Turbo look great when being thrashed around the high street in a vein attempt to look good and attract the attention of the square frame bespectacled book readers sitting in street cafe's sipping a latte, surfing the web on their iPad and reading some Fyodor Dostoevsky book.
