Scrapping a Car

If I ring a scrap man and ask him to come and remove a car, am I looking at paying for the service, or getting any money for it? It's an M reg Nissan Sunny. It needs a new alternator/battery and one of the doors is a bit bent. Apart from that it all works.

Just asking as I don't really know how these things work. Last time I scrapped a car I'd all ready stripped it to a bare shell and got nothing for it. Thoughts?

No tax or MOT, so will need trailering anyway, so not sure that's an option. Do they pay per kg?

^This, if there's not a lot wrong then quite often a small garage owner will take it off your hands. My Escort MOT failure went in the same way for £125.

ebay all day long, just be accurate in your description and you may be suprised at what you get for it.

i sold my mates cinquecento sporting that had been in an accident and had the front o/s wheel hanging off and a bent chassis on ebay for the princely sum of £300!

It had minimal service history, MOT/Tax about to expire and hadn't been started in 6 months, the guy who bought it just wanted as many parts as he could get - you may well find a similar person

Prices fluctuate but I'd estimate £100 per ton if you can take it to the scrapper or maybe £70 per ton if they have come and collect it.

How this compares to what you might get on eBay, I couldn't say.

The recyclers were giving me £100 a car for each one they collected under the scrappage scheme.

Depends on how soon is soon. I'd definitely say it's worth putting it on a three-day listing (or even one-day if you can do this?) on eBay Motors just to see, start it at fifty quid or something. Ring a couple of scrappies and see what they'll give you. Invent a quote ten quid over whatever they say to test the water

Two cars I had taken away by breakers, one I was given £50 for, the other £90.

They turned up, put it on a low-loader, no quibble and off they went.

I did consider ebay, but I couldn't be bothered with the aggravation of dealing with penises.

Actually no it won't. A car can be driven on the roads without either if it is being moved to a dismantelr to be broken up. You'll still need at least 3rd party insurance however. Scrap prices are reasonably good at the moment. Nothing like two years ago but still enough so that they will pay you to take the thing rather than the other way round.

Have a go at selling it first. You never know what might happen. Failing that a local banger racer, stocker or autograsser might take it away. The 3 door Sunnys are quite popular round there as they are light and strong.
