making my own exhaust system
Discussion
G'day All,
Just hoping you guys may have something useful to add.
The summer toy is now off the road for the winter and one thing I have been hoping to do for a couple of years now is to have a go at knocking up my own exhaust system.
The system I have at the minute is a stainless job. On the back of a mk1 MR2 the silencer runners across the entire back of the car just hidden behind and below the rear valance. It weighs a ton.
My idea is to replace this with a carbon fibre silencer. I hoping the weight savings could be worth having and you should be able to see some of it under the rear valance so some show value as well.
I can get a similar length and diameter tube as existing, from a sports bike end can manufacturer. They can supply the stainless end pieces, perforated tube and rock wool for packing it as well. Its just a case of knocking the rest up in stainless tube.
I have no worries about putting it all together but two things worry me. First off, I have been told carbon based silencers tend to be a fair bit less effective at keeping things quiet than their steel counterparts.
Also, will it be ok with the heat. I know it should, but any experience in the area would be gratefully recieved.
Cheers
Steve
