Currently been using the ZTT 135+ but could do with something 4 wheel drive, seat at least 5 adults, get all the skiing/snowboarding gear in, and a good safety record (5 star ncap) for under 10k.

Also a car that can cruise at 100/120mph on German autos and is also good on roads with snow.

What do you think would be best.

A6 quattro or Legacy estate?

Diesel if you care about mpg, 6-cyl petrol if you don't...

Sorry, I've had a hard day at work. I have no idea what I was thinking about suggesting the Porsche. I dont even normally like them!

Well if you purely want safety then landrover defender. 110 to carry the stuff. As 300 posted a few days ago, is statistically the safest car on the road in this country

I've spent too long in the forces and have lots of experience of rovers, drive to the Alps in one, no chance wink

lol i know. a trip to the alps would be painful as hell.

if its safety you're after, then forget about NCAP, and take a look at this list...

also useful that the top 9 of the list are all4x4 suitable vehicles!

can't take the credit, 300 posted this a few days ago :P

I've just gone through the same process with the same budget for a trip to Chamonix in Jan. My original list of contenders was:

Audi Allroad
Merc ML270
BMW X5
Grand Cherokee 2.7CRD
Volvo XC90
Landrover Disco or Freelander

In the end I got a bit carried away and bought a VW Touareg for just over 12k.

If you want to cruise at 120mph, you're really looking at a car, not a squared-off 4x4.

Any big estate will do if you stick winter tyres on it - you don't need 4wd to drive to a ski resort.

That's what I thought till last year, we got caught in a snow blizzard outside Innsbruck, Wasn't much fun for us and the 4x4's coped far better.

The ZTT135+ is a great car, comfy with loads of space and will cruise all day at 100/120mph, just a shame they didn't do a 4x4 model.

If you were able to up your budget to £12k you could get an 06 Subaru Tribeca with low-ish miles.

I've yet to see a gendarme, even when flying down the A6 at 110 in a bright yellow french registered van...

Yes, but you won't come across many Gendarmes in Germany.

Bit small for 5 adults and all kit.

Our XC70 was OK last winter but the tall tyres and high suspension made it a little nervous above 80. It was great in the snow though.

I reckon a V70 D5 AWD would be better.

A6 Quattro?
