Hi all, need some advice on buying a car for the winter.i have just over a grand and have really narrowed it down to 3 particular cars.i live in the country and love b road blasts,so need somthing that can take a hit from a pot hole and will be good fun in snow.me and freinds last year were going out in groups of about six cars,i had a mondeo diesel, and spent the nights going sideways down back roads.was awesome.here are the contenders:

92 legacy estate, with wrx transplant running the 270hp.propper sleeper and wouldn't matter to much if it had a knock or two.also 4wd is bonus but would take a bit longer to master going sideways.

88 205 gti 1.9 cammed on R1 carbs 160hp.most expensive of the three but looks in great nick and has has loads done.bit concerned about the R1 carbs and the troubles they may cause.

93 audi 80 2.8 v6 quattro.would have to get it for a grand, downside big engine may rinse my wages, but it does have difflock front and back, great for the snow and you dont see many.

As a winter hack I wouldn't touch the Peugeot. Anything with a bank of 4 carbs designed for a smooth running motorcycle won't be easy to keep running sweetly on a rough running car engine.

The Subaru will drink as much petrol as the Audi, and with an engine swap it'll cost a packet to insure.

Its got to be the Audi.

I'll swap you a working, if slightly tempremental Mk2 MR2 for the CRX. hehe

I had the previous incarnation of CRX with a 150 bhp VTEC conversion. driving

Oh and if you want a geniune answer, the Legacy, everytime. I have an Impreza Wagon though, so i'm biased. wink

Edit, If it's an engine swap then avoid, just get a twin turbo Legacy instead, slightly better on petrol, and with a quoted 280bhp just as rapid.

The Pug will rot in front of you if you use it as a winter fun car.

The Audi is awd, so not a great car for playing with in the snow, but fine for driving.

I'd be sorely tempted by the legacy. A mate's got a jap import that pushes out about 270 bhp and looks virtually bog standard.

Edited for stupid finger trouble.

Second thought though - the older quattros don't have a diff lock and unless that one has a lsd it'll be pants on the slippy stuff. The legacy on the other hand.....

Another vote here for the Audi – much more class than the Scooby. The Pug looks like a hoot, but it's really only useful as a track car.

you are right about the pug, very good point.carbs and winter dont go from offroading experiance.the audi will consume the same as the legacy but the legacy will be a damn site quicker.checked insurance,im 21 the legacy will cost just over £1000 a year.yes thats really cheap for me.the 205 will cost me £700 in comparison.but will i be able to resell the legacy after the winter?

thanks guys, think the 205 is a no go then.carbs bad for winter and it does not have a heater lol as fully stripped out.

audi is 4wd mate.thats the temptation.A NA V6 with 4WD.would just need to customise the exhaust for tunnel runs, goodbye silencers.lol

I have had an Audi 80 - not 4WD though - and loved it. The only downside on mine was a lack of PAS, but it was a great car and a little bit different at the time. Give it a go.
