OK. 25k budget. 2007/8 shape XJ Sport Premium TDVi or 2005/6 Quattroporte?
Head says Jag, Heart says Mas. The Jag will do oodles more to the gallon, but will it be any more reliable than the Mas?

Thoughts?

Given your car history...
How could you consider anything other than the trident?

Our QP wasn't any less reliable than any other mass produced car really, it did however have some pretty big bills when it came to wear and tear items, specifically clutches and rear tyres.
I'd say its going to be a whole load cheaper to run the Jag.

One is jaguar and the other is masserati . If you can afford the Masser go for it , personally I would go for the jag just because it would be cheaper to run

The Jag is a better car in every way.

Buy the Maserati. I would.

What a great dilemma...in a similar boat but 10 k cheaper as second fun car. I was considering Mas3200 or xk, db7. Rear room however is rubbish so am now looking at 7 series bmw's which seem astonishing value for e65 735 and 745i models. I would do QP but keep a little stash saved when it needs work. At the prices they are they are hugely tempting and by Italian standards, pretty reliable!!

I'd take the Quattroporte if day-to-day running costs wouldn't give me the 'ump.
To me it would depend on my estimated mileage. So long as it wasn't huge, i'd still take the Quattroporte.

That said, the Jag is no awful place to be either.

Having had an e65 and a 3200, get the Maserati. Running costs are pretty similar in my experience. You will come to resent paying the e65 bills, you'll forgive the 3200 every time.

And there is just as much room in the back of a 3200 as there is in a 7 series (Excluding the LWB) - so check again. The boot is big in the 3200 too. Access is trickier (2 door) but the seats move forward very easily on motors. I drove many long distance trips (over 600miles) in my 3200 4 up, and I'm 6'2" and my passengers we all normal sided adult humans...

Given the choice between the TDVi and the Maser it'd take me about 0.5 seconds to decide. Good though the diesel engine is for a diesel it has NO driver involvement whatsoever. Different story if it was an XJR, but that's not the question...

Depends entirely on what you will use the car for, if it’s going to be a commuter barge and subjected to lots of stop start traffic and commensurate mileage, I’d go for the proper auto in the Jag, it will be a little smoother than an early QP and cost a decent amount less . . . . . . Then spend the money saved on something batst crazy for the weekend to get your adrenaline fix.

Now if you could get hold of one of the slighlty later QP's with a proper auto box and petrol consumption wasnt an issue, it would be a different matter smile

Would the Jaguar at simular money not depreciate faster than the Maser? Maybe this may off set the running costs, I should imagine the Jaguar, especially now theres a new model out will keep depreciating hard until you have to pay someone to take it away?
