I've spotted a good deal on a used Opel Insignia, but wondered if anyone knew how it should affect the used value compared to a Vauxhall, and if the spec is the same as UK Vauxhall Insignias? How about servicing?

Any info would be appreciated.

It's exactly the same car. Hell, the VIN number will start with WO (Germany, Opel) on a Vauxhall, or an Opel.

Only thing i'd worry about is if it's an import and needs a different insurance.

Resale value might be a little lower, but it's not gonna be great anyway, if it's a vauxhall rep car. As for spec, well, go check it out, and see what it's got.

Daft question perhaps, but is it definitely right hand drive? LHD cars can be quite hard to sell and I think are worth considerably less as a result.

The standard equipment is probably different if it isn't a UK car (it certainly is for many manufacturers), and I suppose it might be harder to tell wether it has a dodgy history.

The Opels typically seem to be ex-Eire lease vehicles.

Can't say if that's a good or a bad thing, but the Owners Handbook (or Erners Hanbek) might not be any use to you.

Thanks for your comments. Its been imported from Ireland, so RHD. According to the Whatcar valuation its in the region of 2k below dealers valuation for a UK car.

If its imported from Ireland does it need different insurance?

Might have a KPH speedo too if it's Irish.

Depends how long you're going to keep it, long term then go for it but if it's only a year or two then maybe not as it'll be harder to sell on and will be more hassle in general.

If it's an Irish car then check the spec very carefully. Is it the same spec as a UK car?

£2K difference? Get real!

Has it been reregistered in the UK?

My VW van was intially bought and registered in Ireland, but the previous owner brought it back to the UK with him after 2 years or so and had it reregistered in Manchester on UK plates. Hasn't caused us any issues with insurance in the least.

We paid (what I thought) was a very good price for it initially - I think the fact it was an "import" put a lot of buyers off.
