Replacement Pads for 2001 XJR ?
Discussion
Pads are a bit low so would like to replace them. Having searched the interweb I believe I need part number MXD1550AB. (Brembo brake disc and caliper upgarde).
It seems original pads are 300 quid(!), whilst Mintex and TRW(?) are way cheaper.
Any recommendations on manufacturer and where to buy ?

Choice of pad material is strongly dependent on for what you intend to use your car.
Mintex and Pagid are both very reputable friction companies who make a range of high performance pads aswell as "standard" replacement items.
One very great benefit of the massive Brembo R brake upgrade is its huge heat capacity and disipation performance. Others are the very large diameter discs and the 4 pot calipers. All this provides a set up which makes optimum use of the material performance.
I have just replaced front discs and pads on my XJR V8 using standard grade Pagid pads. I can only say I'm very pleased with the result. Good bite, feel and modulation is available at all speeds. (btw, I'm not known by my pals for a Miss Daisy driving style. Also done some competitive rallying)
If I was to be taking this car on a track (which I hope to do at some point as it would be a complete hoot) I would be looking at an upgrade from one of the above mentioned companies. M1144 or Pagird RS14 would give the extra heat resistance for non competitive trackday.
I know EBC are widely discussed as an option but I suffered a very bad experience with yellow grade on a sports car with heavy disc wear and grooving and pad disintegration, so I now keep to the brands I trust from positive good results.
In sourcing the Pads and discs, I was very surprised and pleased to find them stocked at EuroCarParts at a very good price.

Norman, I cant find them anywhere tho
Do you or a contact have any in stock ? Price ?
Would you go for std discs or upgrade to EBC ? I think ive heard you say std discs before, with these pads on as the economical solution
I'll sort something out on MondayDo you or a contact have any in stock ? Price ?

That is a good price, do you have a URL ?
Oh yeah - forgot the link !! http://www.sngbarratt.com/
Could try Euro Car Parts too. I found they had the 330mm x 32 mm "R" spec discs in stock.
Even if not Jag or Brembo 'branded', I doubt there are very many factories tooled up for making such a low volume disc product.
I've never had a problem with disc quality of non-"genuine". I've used aftermarket discs on trackdays and stage rallying and in my experience they are fine. Thermal abuse of any disc during cool-off can warp them irrespective of how much you paid for them!
Cheers

Oh well, bought the Mintex pads but apparantly they are not a very good fit
My mechanic said he had to f
k around a lot to get them in, they didn't just slot straight in like they should.
As they say - you get what you pay for.............
I don't understand where 'a lot' comes into it. You put one new, and one old pad in a vice, and file the new pad backing plate to the same shape as the old one.

The problem with garages nowadays, is that they want to spend 5 minutes doing a job - rather than the hour and a half that you're paying them for!
In normal circumstances one should not have to "dress" the size of the pad backing plate to get them into the caliper.
However on the ali Brembo 4pots there is a build up of corrosion under the stainless steel wear plates at each end of the pad. This can make the pad a very tight fit. The pad backplates may need dressing to get them to a nice snug sliding fit. Don't go too far or they will rattle on bumpy roads or clack when brakes initially applied.
