Wedge rolling chassis with logbook wanted
Discussion
Is it possible to build a Wedge from this point, these days. Remember someone
pointing out there was a shell or two from the old factory lying around. If not would tet or the like have enough to build from scratch or is it a case of buying up one of the many Wedge right offs that appear to being springing up in breakers yards all over the place.
What's your plan if you get this, must be a megga chalenge to get something like this of the ground.

Maybe he has a car with a rotten chassis, and wants a rolling chassis to restore then swap the body.
I think the 2 400SE body's at the factory have absorbed too much water due to the them being untreated and being outside, else I would have been tempted to make them an offer.
Need to sort a few things out then going to try and get Pauls old 400SE body (well the rear of it, as want to bond the rear and side skirts onto the racer, and want to run wider wheels, plus I like the look of the rear under spoiler, but will look into building a defuser into it.

I was thinking more about using them to make a new mould rather than using them as a shell , they were up there forever.I think the 2 400SE body's at the factory have absorbed too much water due to the them being untreated and being outside, else I would have been tempted to make them an offer.

Interesting, the rear spoiler always draws attention but would be well impressed if you could build in a diffuser, not sure how much of the
spoiler would be left,do you have a running board or anything under the car as it is?
Hows the racing going anyway ,it's been a couple of years hasn't it?

Hi folks..sorry but while we are touching on the subject of chassis and racing..I cant help but still think that for the people who race em there is a possible solution to fuelling..for standard cars as well if needed.. I could well be wrong as i dont know about stress factors on chassis..but the more i look at where the fuel tanks are positioned the more i think that the chassis could be modified slightly to accomodate a full length tank..you would loose some depth of the tank but make it up in the middle..In this photo of chassis restoration i see a small strut at about 30 degrees (10-4 oclock)just where tanks sit in the centre frame. could this be re-positioned perhaps at a more of 50-60deg?..not sure how high the prop sits but would that be a possibility..its just a thought as i will look into getting plastic fuel cells,tanks for wedge..cheers.probably talking a load of..

Well would only make the diffuser mainly for looks and would do the middle section in-between the gaps, I do have a side exhaust so could make a completely flat floor.Interesting, the rear spoiler always draws attention but would be well impressed if you could build in a diffuser, not sure how much of the

Racing has gone very well this year, finished all 10 races in entered, 9 x 3rd in class and 1 x 2nd in class. so finished 3rd overall in class and 4 out of everyone, there is some race reports of last race here http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
You can watch the 1st 4 races on line also http://www.raceandrallyuk.tv
And some race photo's from Oulton here http://redirectingat.com/?id=1044X509854&xs=1&...

Do you mean just the side skirts or the whole body from engine bulkhead back - mine being a conv against the FHC you currently have ?gsx600 said:

The rear wing on the 400SE isn't a proper wing. The S1 390SE introduced the wing, hung from the boot floor on two steel struts, then the late S2 390s had a rear bumper that incorporated the wing - except it's not a true aerofoil, it's hollow. That assembly was then blended into the bodyshell to become the rear end of the 400SE, also with a fake wing. Only the outermost ends are aerofoils, the centre section is just the lower surface, if you follow.Steve Heath said years back that afer ripping his wing off on a tyre wall he left it off and noticed no difference - in fact he claimed it shaved (IIRC) 25Kg off the car's weight. Arguably the wing was more intended for high-speed straight-line stability than the corner-to-corner dashes of sprinting... but equably arguably, it was a fashion statement borrowed from the racing Jaguars of the time and contributes sweet F-A to the wedge's handling
- the fact that the 400SE apparently didn't need a 'true' wing rather supports this.But it does look cool

I did to increase the arches on the car, and thought why at it may as well try and put the 400SE rear on the car and make it look a lot nicer, most people what the racers to look nice as well as go well.
I did not think the wing would weigh as much as 25KG though.
I think we also get much higher speeds than the sprinters upto 130MPH, so it may make some difference at that speed.
As said though I've got quite a bit to sort out 1st, and may run out of time, plus as said it mainly cosmetic for my own tastes, I spent silly amounts on the car so may as well make it look how I want it. I've got some idea for finish of the complete body also, but keeping that under my hat for now.

Yes, 25kg sounds rediculas so let's see:-
Mass = density x volume
Say = 2500 x 2(width) x 1(length, top and bottom) x 1/200(thickness)
= 25kg!
3 layer GRP with Gelcoat is about 6-7KG per sq meter, so yes it could be 25KG at 2.5M x 0.6M x 2 lengths, plus add some for paint and sides. just don't look that heavy.Mass = density x volume
Say = 2500 x 2(width) x 1(length, top and bottom) x 1/200(thickness)
= 25kg!
I know my splitter is same sort of size but is 1/2 that weight.

I have two GRP sea kayaks, both about 17 foot 6 long, they each weigh about 25Kg... but it's mostly very thin, gets a bit scary when you bounce off a rock...

Interestingly, on my car the exhaust exits through a hole in the wing, which has a moulded recess for the purpose.
There's another moulded recess on the other side, as though the plan was to have twin tailpipes: did any of the 390SEs have two?
