The Book People (the folks who visit offices and leave books behind) have the Larousse Gastronomique on offer at the moment - £20 (usually £60, ~£35 seems to be the norm for a discount bookshop).

You can order it from them online, postage is £1.95 or free if you spend another £5.00.

I thought this might be of interest to fellow food enthusiasts, I picked a copy up yesterday and after a quick flick though it looks useful. I couldn't find it any cheaper elsewhere and for such a chunk of a book £20 seemed to be a bargain.

For those of you interested in proper french cuisine, you could do worse than this too:

It's not a cook book it's a dictionary/encyclopaedia type thing. Cracking for looking up basic techniques and classic recipes.

It obviously covers meat but it's not the main focus

Just bought this. If you buy this and nothing else, 'single item delivery' is free, so £20 is the final bill. It's the 2009 latest version of the book as well, the photo shows it without the box it comes in. Here's the details from the publisher's website :

was flicking through this is waterstones last night, remembered this thread and just ordered a copy.

it's still £20, bloody bargain.

ps - if you're passing through york, the designer outlet now has a phaidon store, all books 1/3 off. i'd recommend the tapas book and vefa's kitchen [greek].

just need the india one, silver spoon and ottolenghi's plenty and i reckon i have all the cookbooks i'll ever need!

I bought my daughter a copy a couple of years back...must have been just after publication...I think I paid £40 then....so gnashing of teeth later when I was able to pick a copy for myself at £20. Its a darn good buy at £20.

Those bookpeople also do, or did a book "The big book of sauces" by Anne Sheasby. *Highly* recommended if you can get a copy. I think mine was £6 or £7

Oh yeah, for those with a kindle...Mrs Beaton's famous book on household management, is a freebie download. Not bad eh? smile
