As above. Love the GTI, such a well resolved ride and chassis and immense fun to drive. More suited to our weather too.

330ci, better engine, feels more solid and from owning one before, you can be fairly heavy handed with them i.e. drive them spiritedly day in day out and they'll never complain. Only downside is servicing costs but I'm a big fan on the engine and look of the car (currently drive a 325) A bit trickier on the limit than the GTI, so probably not as entertaining to drive quickly on the twisties.

If there are any GTI owners I'd be interested to hear if there were any issues with their cars, and more over, if they regret their purchase at all.

The BMW, although I'd prefer a touring.

No, the E46 derivative.

I would love the BMW if it were a touring. Always have preferred them to their saloon counterparts. However, not liking Golfs much I may have to say GTi. At least it can be driven properly if you feel.

On a more serious note. Depends what you want from a car, what sort of value you are looking at and a host of other factors.

RWD > FWD IMO most of the time.

How comparable price wise is something like a DC2/5 ITR? If you want FWD handling and fun that's were I'd be heading.

Ok if it was an E92 330i then that would be a no-brainer, but even still I would have thought you would get more 'fun' out of an E46 330i. I tried a GTi once and it was nice but maybe 'nice' is not what you're after wink

confused

Around the 8-10k mark. Insurance would be an issue as I'm expecting it to go up when I renew this December. The DC2/5 are expensive to insure.

You don't think the GTI is a fun car to drive then?

300, go look in the Facebook Fails thread in The Lounge. I posted something yesterday that you of all people, would probably appreciate.
It's front wheel drive. In wet weather it can be driven a bit harder and won't bite.

I haven't driven any since the Mk3 so have no idea if these are equally as poo as that was. Although I wouldn't mind owning one for simple thrills.

Won't bite what? In wet weather, you're going to have more traction in a RWD.

It's not that they're more dangerous, people managed for years and years, when almost everything was RWD. You just been conditioned to believe that FWD is safe, RWD is not.

Buy a 330. Much better car than a Golf, and you won't find many people on here that disagree.
I've owned several 325's and one 330 before so I haven't been conditioned to feel anything. They are not great in the wet and they do not have more traction than fwd cars, particularly the GTI. In fact the whole point of this thread was my frustration at not being able to enjoy the 325/330 in the wet weather; unless you have a nice wide road with a perfect surface, they struggle to make swift progress.

Another option is a Mondeo ST220, more kit as standard and you can get a newer one for the same money, but it looks a bit grim on fuel consumption in comparison. It's the only one that's swaying me away from the 330.

I can't decide damnit! grumpy

Get a RWD car with the engine at the right end, then. smile

Fair enough, if you think the RWD car, with the LSD has less traction than the FWD open diff'd Golf, maybe you should have the Golf.
No LSD chap smile

It's not a given that the BMW will have more traction, it depends on just how little grip there is. Yes the weight shift helps the BMW, but the static weight distribution of the Golf is better. I would have expected the BMW to be better on anything with much more grip than sheet ice, though.

How is the Golf better than that?
confused The Golf has more weight over its driven wheels.

The idea that 50/50 is the best weight distribution is complete bks anyway. Sure if the car was 4wd and had symmetric four wheel steering it might be best, but given the different jobs that the front and rear wheels do, there is nothing special about a 50/50 weight distribution except marketing.

I've had both. I had a 330ci and now have an 05 plate GTI with the DSG gearbox. I much prefer the Golf, it's far more fun to drive than the 330 ever was and it's also a proper petrolheads car, the 330ci certainly isn't. In fact I really want to get it on the track soon.

Don't forget the MK5 GTI won Top Gear car of the year in 2005 and was highly praised by pretty much every motoring journalist out there. But don't listen to me as I have real world experience of both smile Some (330ci owning) expert will be along in a minute to tell me how wrong I am, this is Pistonheads after all smile
