I've been looking around at getting a supercharged MX-5 probably a MK1.

Is there any reason why the majority of the ones i see are 1.6 models not 1.8? Are the engines slightly different is the 1.6 more reliable?

They dont seem to come up for sale very often or am i looking in the wrong places.

I don't think they were any more reliable but in most MKis there was very little difference in power between 1.8 and 1.6 (mre power in 1.8 but heavier engine), and there are loads of second hand parts available for the 1.6

1.8 engine is no heavier that the 1.6 (or not enough to matter). It's the car that the 1.8 engine fits into that's heavier unless you have a very early 1993 1.8 which is as light as the earlier 1.6 or a later than 1994 1.6 which is as heavy as the later 1.8...

Does that even make sense? wobble

Worth remembering that the 1.8 is better able to handle the extra power due to beefier driveshafts etc.
