I went down to Reading today to have a long term windscreen problem rectified on my 993, while I was there I raised the issue with the service manager at AFN Reading, (a nice fella called Andy) about some people's perception that OPC's are not really that interested in 993's anymore, he did seem genuinely puzzled as to why this should be, and went on to explain that he has at least 5 proper 993 mechanics, one of them having 20yrs experience of air cooled 911's. He was also at pains to point out that if people were that concerned they should just give him a call and he will happily discuss any fears or issues that one may have, in my case he said he would be more than happy to introduce me to the mechanic who would service my car so that we may discuss any issues that I may have. After this conversation I was then introduced to another guy from Porsche GB called Steve Harris, another nice guy, very earnest and straightforward was my impression of him, I raised the same issue with him as I did with Andy, and he also seemed puzzled, he told me that they are trying to reach out to 993 owners, for example he/they had invited the Porsche GB owners (with pre 996's) down for a meeting and viewpoint exchange which apparently went down very well on both sides. He and Andy also explained that they are trying to accommodate 993 owners in terms of cost of ownership, where for example they have introduced the £100 MOT Guarantee, where for £99, you get a £1,0000 guarantee on parts n labour, Andy also mentioned that they are introducing a 'cheaper' warranty that will include cars up to 9 yrs old, yes he confirmed that includes late 993's!, they are still working out the pricing for this, but he said it would be competitive, Now back to Steve Harris, who when I said that they are losing business to the independents, he surprised me, and no I didn't mis-hear this, that if I knew any 993 owners who wanted their car serviced at Reading, then he would offer them a 25% discount on their first service with them, yep, that's what he said, so if you're interested in this offer give him a call and mention our conversation today. I was finally given a tour of the workshop facilities which was as you may expect an impressive setup, the staff looked focused and motivated and able to work in large open spaces, all in all what I guess we would expect from the 'flagship' OPC, and to cap an interesting and enjoyable day they had a Black Carrera GT there sitting in an anonymous corner of the facility, which was being prepared for a customer, (I didn't ask and he didn't say who), anyway I thought I would share that with you, and for the record, I don't work for Porsche, and if you have seen some of my previous posts you will see I have been at times a harsh critic, but I must say that seeing how they operate was enlightening.

If OPCs really cared about customers and cars, they would stop paying the technicians on a bonus scheme which encourages them to get the work done as quickly as possible, which in turn means things are not done as they should be.
