Why is it in this country that to be thick seems to be a desirable attribute
It's not... It is simply the media that has that particular fetish. Look at your friends, etc. Are they thick? There are thick people, don't get me wrong, but I don't think the desirability is just on the part of heat magazine, big brother, and all the other retarded 'entertainment' we have nowadays. If you don't expose yourself to that crap, then you don't get the idiocy.Mebbe you just notice it more as you get older and wiser?
That is, as more and more of your contemporaries plateau intellectually, the world about you seems to get dumber?
Take solace in the fact that one day you'll plateau also (quite contentedly I would imagine), whilst someone cleverer than you will continue growing psychologically (leading to their subsequent, incessant, complaining on the internet of haw dumb you are

I was pondering on a very similar theme only last night.Got in from work and put 6 music on the radio while I was changing into clothes omore suitable for walking my marauding hounds. Some 'kids' in a band were being interviewd by Steve Lemac [sp?] - I instantly regretted putting the radio on at that time of day, because that man is to entertainment, what rohypnol is to dating - and they could barely utter a word qwithout an "um" or "err". Forget sentences and any semblance of articualtion.
I have noticed, with some younger family members, that there is a sort of kudos attached to being, well, virtually dumb - inarticulate. What happened to all those nice, cheeky, smart-arsed, gobby teenagers?

It's been a problem for yearsDumb and disinterested = Cool
Clever and enthusiastic = geek, nerd etc etc
The media has a lot to answer for. Hopefully, enough youngsters grow out of the "cool to be dumb" phase of life and become useful, contributory citizens to society DESPITE the culture they find themselves immersed in.
I think the problem is particularly acute amomngst boys and is an underlying, corrosive aspect that, I think, is having enormous detrimental effects on this country - and is part of the reasion why we have dropped behind countries where being smart is looked on as a "good thing".
James May could very well be the saviour of the nation.

This relentless media-driven dumbing-down is just ludicrous at times. I am no sports fan, but I was appalled to hear on the radio that the asymmetric bars used in gymnastics competitions are now referred to as the 'uneven' bars.
Why, FFS? They aren't uneven, they are asymmetric! Don't the gymnasts have any pride in themselves or their efforts?
Jeez.

The 'Proud To Be Thick' movement has huge support from swathes of mainly left wing groups and politicians. That's why EastEnders, the thickies violence and hate manual, is on the BBC.Having a stupid population is the best thing when you are a socialist in/seeking power: they can't add up and you can distract them when (for instance) signing away your rights to the European Empire in Lisbon) with some celebrity gossip, some new bogus threat or the latest TV. New Labour entirely counted on it for the last decade, and it worked for them.
The only down side if you end up living in a country full of thickos so it's short sighted, but there again;- they are socialists so they can't see that.

I think its just more obvious now with TV and internet.
Lots of intergeneration stupidity now too, many of the most stupid, ingorant, spivvy types ive met are in fact well over 50. It didnt just creep up on us, its always been there.
I agree absolutely. Thickness has been around for generations. The difference now is that it is something to aspire to. Now, even intelligent people find it embarrasing to diclose their intelligence - and may even feel the need to apologise for it.Lots of intergeneration stupidity now too, many of the most stupid, ingorant, spivvy types ive met are in fact well over 50. There is a "Geek/Nerd" thread running in The Lounge at the moment - which I feel is part of the problem.

And morons.
ITV is a good example of dumbing down in action.
For 10 years they have been in a race to the bottom to attract the thickest people with a credit card to watch their adverts. They now find themselves in a position that even Channel 5 will be thinking is somewhat low-brow and unable to sell advertising as the market knows that their viewers have no spending power.
It staggers me that they are surprised at the seeming failure of their early morning show. Anyone awake at that time has a job and a future and will be watching something suitable or nothing at all. Their typical audience doesn't get up until much later.
The removal of competition from schools over the last 13 years has also produced a swathe of children who simply do not know how to compete and excel.
The desire to put as many Britons as possible into the welfare system has also created a culture of stagnancy.
And then, modern children's TV appears to be terrified to push the boundries. No longer do these shows dare say something which their target audience may not have heard of, as such these children are not stimulated to ask questions and learn for themselves.
And finally, this country has the worst generation of parents that have ever walked the planet. Lazy s
ts who honestly think that the State will be educating their offspring not them.
The result is that this country is split more than ever into those with a future and those with none and until they take a hammer to the parents nothing can change.

Well said, sir. When records are being set weekly for X f
ktor viewing figures, it sums up perfectly to me that the majority are this way.
Its truly saddening to think that the majority of people's weeks is consumed by the 'lives' of some no-marks attempts to make Simon Cowell richer than ever, whilst they are chewed up and spat back out in the name of entertainment
I have honestly given up and instead take comfort in the knowledge that realising all of the above in my 20s, means I can always rise above the herd and continue to prosper.
And buy lots of fast BMWs

Indeed. The Mode would be a better expression than the Arithmetic Mean (average) but, in keeping with the thread title, a majority wouldn't understand the distinction. Or even the term.
