The local postman has decided that he is no longer delivering post to my house because he is afraid of my dog.
To be fair the dog (british bulldog)does go mental (snarling and jumping up to get the mail)when anyone drops post in the letter box.
However the dog is inside the house and the post man is on the outside. So i can't see a problem.
He claims that he is in danger of losing a finger when putting letters in the letter box but... you don't put your hand in the letter box you just push the letter through.
I think he is just being a prick, he is a hateful little man even at the best of times.
Is he being completely unreasonable or do I have to put up a post box out side as per his suggestion?
He said he has spoken to his supervisor about it and he advised him to stop delivering the post to my house.
Surely as a postman he encounters some actual savage dogs on a daily basis. My dog has never bitten anyone, he just has a thing about post.

Sorry about the spelling in the title. frown

If you can, fit a wire cage behind the letter box - it will catch all the post thus saving it from Fido, and the postman can't argue that he is at risk of losing his fingers.

This used to happen to me when I was a paperboy in the dim and distant past. A bit scary at first but you soon got used to it. Im surprised that a grown man finds it a problem.

Wire cage as Ron suggests would probably be best all round.

This is what I was going to suggest

Wire cage.

He doesn't sound like he's being a prick. I'm fine with dogs but would be wary of posting mail through a door with a snarling, barking dog trying to grab the mail. Especially when you consider sometimes mail gets stuck halfway and fingers are used to push it all the way through. Add in a potential fear of dogs and surely you can empathise?

My dog used to savage the mail when it dropped though and I just put up an external mail box. Everyone happy.

We've got a rotweiler and ended up sticking one of those lockable postboxes on the front of our house. An alternative to the wire box as I personally think they're a bit ugly.

Bought one of these recently: http://www.simplypostboxes.co.uk/brass-effect-lett...

Does the job. I think I got it a bit cheaper but it's hardly a massive expense.

I used to deliver papers as a kid, one house had a dog that went mad and grabbed the paper and pulled it, I used to hang onto and give the dog a good battle! (May have made a few growling noises to wind it up more too)

Yes Mr Postie does stick the tips of fingers through the letterbox, especially as the letterbox has a very heavy spring on it. I nearly managed to take a bite of them last time but he doesn't seem to come round anymore frown

We only have an external mailbox because Luxembourg Posties are too fking lazy to walk up your driveway and put it in the door.

Our posty is great

He comes armed to deal with our dogs and they know it

Every time he turns up and they are outside they run up to him barking and he unleashs his defence

Dog Biscuits

And the big vicious one rolls for for tummy rubs

Inform your postman to roll up the post - push it a little way throught the leter box, and when the dog goes for it - slam it through the postbox as hard as possible. That way:

1) The dog gets fed up with getting smacked in the face.
2) The postman feels like he is getting retribution.

I'm on the postmans side.

Perhaps the Postie is being a bit of an ar$e (you're better placed than me to make that call), but your dog sounds like a nasty piece of work.

I hate aggressive dogs.

I used to have a similar thing delivering papers.

I'd stuff the paper about half way through, wait for the dog to come bounding towards the door at a rate of leptons then remove the paper. *thud*

Repeat until bored

ETA: I would have thought a box outside would give the postie more piece of mind than a cage he can't see. do you not get fed up of your dog savaging your mail?

The wuss hehe

You could have some fun with this. Hide,... then next time he comes down your drive, creep up and grab the back of his ankle and make a loud GRRRRrrrrr noise. Get the Mrs to film it and post it on YouTube for us smile

Then fit a wire cage.

I do, but you cant say no to this face.

He's absolutely fine with anyone else coming near the house, he just hates this postman.
