Yes I would recommend joining. I have been a member since getting my second Porsche a few years ago - now on my third I still find the club useful.

I am not the sort of person who bothers with the local once a month meetings - although if you like that sort of thing I understand they are fine...

I use the club for:

1) The Club Magazine - a mine of information about Porsches, Independent Specialists, Main Dealers, parts, spares and so on.

2) Tours - the club organises large tours from time to time. These can be fun. We are also members of the TVRCC who do similar tours. Destinations have been the Isle of Man, Southern Ireland and so on.

3) Track Days - this is the biggie for me. Club track days have the advantage of being run for the benefit of the members rather than the profit of the track day organiser. Also there is the advantage of knowing that absolutely everyone on track with you loves their pride and joy as much as you love yours and consequently driving standards are high and generally polite! Prangs are rare - but, of course, do happen...

4) Club Insurance Scheme. The club recommends a small variety of insurance schemes. Benefits being free PCGB track day cover and sometimes even a year's Club membership FREE! (Performance Marque).

The club forum is OK. A few regulars seem to make it up but I prefer the banter on here from that perspective - but it IS a good place to get technical assistance...

All in all - worth the £60 - provided you make use of what's offered. Which I, personally, do...

If your "region" or "register" (geographic area or model of vehicle) has an active social scene that can be good too but its not really my thing - I use PH for that...

Yes if you are going to do/use the things offered to you as mentioned in Don's post.

One thing he missed out is my OPC gives 10% discount on repairs and servicing to PCGB members. This saved me about £100 last week on my 2nd annual service. It'll save me another £100 or so when I get replacement front discs and pads again in the next month or so.

I think members can also advertise their own cars for sale in the magazine free of charge.

Suggest you give it a go for £60, the magazine alone is a useful source of cars and parts. If you are a Porscheholic then the factory visit in company of fellow addicts is a memorable experience.

I joined for the magazine: a fascinating insight into the socio-economic make-up of largely clandestine Nazi renegades, posing as legitimate, home counties-based septugenarian retirees.

That, and the option of saving £50/year to observe the greatest motor racing circuit in Blighty under conditions of vile precipitation whilst simultaneously sampling the finest offerings from state of the art canteen sourced fodder and making merry with some of PH's finest denizens.

And, er, Steve Kevlin: what he doesn't know about Porsches probably isn't worth a tiddler.

Chin, chin.

A fine time was had by all as I recall - but would have been much finer had it not been for the remarkable preciptation that practically flooded the venue. A lasting memory I have is of our own dear CarZee staring at the Sky, Alf Garnett like, and hurling abuse at it as the skies cleared - just prior to the evening shift getting their turn at the hallowed tarmac.

"Tcnu!" He yelled. IIRC...

Still. We should all try again. Perhaps, as Jeremy suggested and I would like, at Brands...

It's worth giving it a go Bob. It's a club with 16,000 members from all walks of life so not everything is everyones cup of tea. I don't normally bother with the regional pub-meets, prefering the track days and 944 Register get togethers.

If you use a lot of OPC parts the 10% discount can quickly pay for the membership and sometimes you can get 20% on items they find hard to shift. The club forum is getting better (the 944 section is brill and the moderator on there is a lovely bloke and very easy going. Funnily his nickname is the same as mine )

Why so pricy then? far less people on track than other operators?- not that ive noticed, but more likely the higher cost is perhaps a more a scare off the chavs & scrotes type thing like RMA etc?? unless the bigger organisers ie easytrack bookatrack etc etc get a much bigger discount.

Still the extra profit is going somewher tho eh ....

What's the classified section of Porsche Post like? is it any good? (does it have many M030 968 Club Sports for sale more specifically!)

Marv, there's always hundreds of Porsche for sale in there, but rarely a M030 968. In fact this month there are precisely ZERO of any type of 968

Iggy, you're right the club trackdays do seem to be getting a little pricey and I've asked this question a few times. Looking at last years trackday accounts they ran 15 days with (from memory) approx 800 driver places and they made around £10k profit. Now thats only £12.50 a place, so I think its a simple fact that they can't be getting the track hire at as good a rate as the companies that are able to buy in bulk and run 2-3 days a week

It was indeed! And nice and hot they were getting too...

Great fun day - even though my brakes finally started complaining at the absolute hammering I was dishing out to them...

Poor car - it deserves a nice trip to a specialist to give its brakes the once over (new pads I'll be bound)...

Are they really pricey then? £155 for Castle Combe doesn't see that bad. Especially when there's only six cars on track at a time. I know Jonny at Bookatrack has twelve...

Mind you - there's plenty of room even with twelve on...

So you could be right Alex. But the combination of free insurance for the days and the standard of driving (by this I mean consideration for others rather than sheer speed) wins our for me...

Cheers Don, as a spectator I was impressed by the 'road manners' and Iguana, be more inclined to 'have a go' with my own kind.
