As this is a BMW event and im a sceptical person at the best of times im presuming the test is suited to the BMW's drivetrain.
But what i dont get is why the Audi sits and spins the wheels with no grip! i always thought power was transfered to the wheels with the most grip?
Anyone help fill in the knowledge void i have.

Some do, others only engage drive to the back wheels when the front lose grip, a la VW's 4Motion. No idea which do which however.
I'm thinking maybe it had a road biased setting switched on. BMW X5s are terrible in mud - I once saw one on a slope to get out of the car park at the Goodwood FoS spin the front right for a second, then the front left, then the rear left, then the rear right, and then the front left again, as it gently slid down the hill. In the same time I saw it overtaken by a V8 land rover S3, an diesel astra van, and possibly the most embarassing of all, the not particularly off-road biased Triumph GT6.

TorSen T3 on the new ones. Most of the power goes to the rear now. Open front and rear diffs with electornic diff lock. New ones can also be fitted with a fancy torque vectoring system as a factory option. That's the proper 4WD ones, not the Haldex.Edited by ManOpener on Friday 29th October 17:18

user error to suit BMWs propaganda needs As this is a BMW event and im a sceptical person at the best of times im presuming the test is suited to the BMW's drivetrain.

That must have been fun to watch. If I ever buy a 4wd I'll learn how to use it properly and it will be suitably tyred!redstu said:

I knew the A3 had a crappy Haldex, but this one just looks like an open centre diff. Even the original early Quattros had a manual locker for the centre.
A torsen behaves like an open diff if there is no load on an axlw - which there didn't appear to be here. But I would've expected the traction control to brake the rear wheelsGassing Station | General Gassing [Archive] | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
