After some thinking i've decided to sell my XJS. Much as i love the car i just miss having a manual gearbox. Also i want to use some of the money tied up in the cat for other things.

So the criteria are as above...ideally i'd like something i can insure on a classic policy but it will be a second car either way. Economy isn't an issue as it's a second car. Ideally i'd like decent displacement rather than revvy.

Budget is 2k ish...

Thoughts so far...maybe a manual 6 series? 944?

I know for 2k it won't be a mint anything but as long as it isn't a shed and isn't rotten i'm not fussed. Just want something that sounds nice, goes nice and has a proper gearbox!

944 is a good shout, a decent 8v model will be available for that kind of cash, also consider the 924S version.

How about a Bmw E28 or E34 5 series - some very good 535i around at the moment

Manual XJS/XJ40- I've had a manual 40 so don't need to go back there. To be honest a bought a auto XJS as it's just a wafter really, can't see a manual box suiting it. Not chuckable really.

E36- Owned a couple, nice cars but not really "special" enough for a weekend car

E34- Maybe, but again not sure it would be special enough to justify itself

How rapid are 944's?

That looks suspiciously like a 16V non-turbo and the seller has been rather coy about saying exactly what it is and very careful with the photos. Plenty of 20 valve turbos about for this budget.

If you want to save money buying any £2k car that's "different" sounds risky to me. Risky in the sense of big bills just around the corner. Better the devil you know - or buy something with guaranteed low running costs.

I think you will struggle to get a manual E24 635CSi, not many in the first place. What about a manual XJS 4.0 Facelift? They are still about. An E30 325i is perhaps too obvious a choice and I am biased toward them (owning as many as I do), but manual E28 M535i (m30 motor) would be available in that bracket.....just. You could pick up a nice Mercedes W124 Coupe 300 24V for that money, and they are nice.

Would a 2k ish Skyline (manual and N/A) be a world of issues? also how quick are they?

I've got a Mk II cacooned at home (well, it's dads) Black, 2 owners, FSH and about 130k. If it didn't have a slush box i'd have it on the road. Lovely 80's rightness.
