Exhaust tailpipe design

We have almost finished my exhaust (pics to follow over weekend) and my attention has turned to the exhaust tailpipe design.

I have gone over to a single turbo and so the tailpipe will come out on the right hand side of the car, the exhaust is 3.5inches and I do have around 2inches extra room were the tailpipes normally exit as I modified the chassis moving the intercooler brace.

Also I am considering were to exit the wastegates, these will not be silenced and as such I can exit these wherever I want.

Of cause I have a few ideas about what to do but thought I open the floor to peoples views and ideas

If you're planning a single exit then it has to be central IMHO and vent the wastegates out the bottom out of sight. Or (my personal preference) make the wastegate exit match the main exhaust and have them in the standard positions.

Center would look better, but I went with the "form follows function" approach. This is the single turbo conversion designed by TurboHoses in the US. We talked about routing the wastegate exit to the left side, but there is no reasonable path. The tailpipe is squashed a little to fit in the slot.

I like Jims one, but not keen on the huge central exit one..... I had seen a curved exit one (hoovers I think) and I really liked that but we are concerned that one part would not get sooted up and it may look strange.

I think that central exit looks ridiculous, the rest is superb until you get to that bit. As far as the sooting issue, how about painting the inside of them both with stove paint? Its matt black and good with heat

I agree with Bondy, some really nice heavy looking tail pipes centre, i am not keen on the fabricated ones, you can just tell somebody has made them. My powerflow tail pipes cost about £300 which is not a lot of money but it gives a quality finish and really its the only part of the exhaust anybody ever sees, so in my opinion get some like those on Bondy's pic.

Kind if agree with ferg... its a one off and as long as it looks high quality id like people to notice this rather than think its OEM.

I think the difference is between "made" and "home made", the edges of that exhaust outlet need better finishing, something more than the end of a sheet of metal and it's not Andy's we're commenting on so nothing personal.

I just get the feeling that there's some sort of idea that something bought from a 'supplier' is somehow superior. I'm not sure andygtt's experiences bear this out....

Not at all Ferg, the pics of the functional bits of Andy's turbo/exhaust on the other thread are a thing of beauty to my eyes (unlike the wheels) but you need to just finish off with some style?

Putting together an exhaust system is different to fabricating some tail pipes out of pieces of plate, tail pipes require a better quality finish to the rest of the exhaust system in my opinion.

When we say 'making' its a loose term, because exhaust systems are made up of lots of off the shelf items, bends, straights, silencers, cats etc... which are skillfully cut and welded together.
I.e. On that exhaust system pic above with the rectangular tail pipe, with the exception of the flange plates and a few other little bits, the only part that has been fabricated from scratch is the tail pipe and this is the most aesthetical part of the exhaust system.
