The W140 S-Class, is it better than my current Benz? (see profile for pics)

Been offered a tidy, low miler for a decent price but am torn as I like my 124 and can't work out if selling it for the 140 is a good idea. The 124 still has so much comfort and class....and works so well. That said, the S is lower mileage and has better history.

Oh, the S is a 280, but as I want it as my economical car that's just fine with me. I've driven plenty of the 2.8's and I'm happy. A 500 isn't right for what I need it for.

So, what to do?

Lovely car but depreciate like stones so ensure you buy at the optimum year. You only have to look at prices over the past 5 years to see. Same as the BMW 7 series.

Im sure you will make the right choice.

I think I agree about the 124 being better, that's what is holding me back.

As for the AMG, it's lovely but the TVR is for fun, the Benz to use for business, parking on the street and routine daily miles. It's a bit excessive for that smile

W140s have reputation for monstrous complexity and not being remotely DIY-able. I would stick with what you've got.

I had an 'S' before I had a 300TE.
Much prefered the W124.
The S didn't have the quality of the TE.

Heretical perhaps, but I just don't like the W140 shape.

If you're feeling brave: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2203115.htm

But I'd stick with the 124s if it were my decision.

i had a W140 S280 a few years back and i absolutley loved it.

it developed a misfire fault a little while after starting that would cure itself after turning the engine off and then back on again. it steadily grew worse and no mercedes specialist or dealer could diagnose the fault!

had to sell it as it wasfrown

Personally I'd stick with the 124. S-classes of any year, however reliable they should be, have the potential to deliver an earth shattering bill. They are complex cars and parts are scarce and often mega money.

I also recall doing an exhaust on an (albeit W220) S-class and the bill coming out at nearly £3000. In other words the same price as a whole W124 in good nick.

Thanks guys.

I don't normally need to seek advice (I usually just forge ahead regardless) but was truly stumped this time.

I'll stick with the 124, it's too good to sell anyway!
