Peugeot 306 D Turbo
Discussion
Going to have a look at one of these tomorrow for a work/station/shopping hack and to teach the g/f to drive in.
It's got reasonably high miles but lots of service history, new MOT with only a couple of minor advisories and a recent cambelt change. Looks in absolutely mint condition and in my favourite colour too.
Any advice for what to look for?

Is it an actual D Turbo or an HDi in D Turbo trim? If the latter then watch for noisy crank pulley, fixable, uprated part is about 80 quid, also air con pipes comrade and leak, common excuse is that it just needs regassing, when really it wants expensive pipes. Go nice with a remap.
If the former, then they they are pretty much bomb proof, very tunable and can be run on veg oil.

And it just takes a screwdriver, spanners and a bit of fiddling to up the fuel, up the boost, and take the power to a much more grin inducing 120ish bhp.
At 90bhp they're a hoot (used to chuck one around on a regular basis, lift off oversteer is mucho fun in them!) at 120bhp they become fun+
Fun+ because you can smoke around all over the place in it, take it off down country roads and drive it at 10/10ths without the hassle of worrying about being caught speeding!!

Nah, got the MX5 for that. Might as well keep it standard. At 90bhp they're a hoot (used to chuck one around on a regular basis, lift off oversteer is mucho fun in them!) at 120bhp they become fun+

Vegetable oil (subject to bosch pump) 78p a litre new in Costco. Will run almost 90% veg to derv.
Do any come with the Bosch pump as standard? I've done some half-hearted reading into it and most seem to fit pumps from other vehicles ('Transit 11mm' is mentioned a lot) for either veg oil or further tuning potential.Edited by twazzock on Saturday 30th October 20:00

Briefly looked at it, but it'll only save me a fiver a month which isn't worth the added risk plus hassle of shopping for lots of veg oil. Recommended ratios are about 20:80 in the winter, 50:50 in the summer and 30:70 in the Autumn/Spring. Assuming 85p/litre for veg oil (Tesco price, we don't have any cheap supermarkets - Lidl etc nearby) and 1.19 for diesel and based on my pretty low mileage it just isn't worth it. Even if I ran 100% veg oil year round it'd only save me £12/month!
Besides, I've no idea if it has a Lucas or Bosch pump, from what I've read, probably Lucas.
Had a Citreon ZX turbo diesel for a couple of years, same engine and very similar car.
Good engine but ignore servicing at your peril.
Anything with an engine oil leak, walk away. The heads have a habit of warping and it's a big bill to sort it. A gear box oil leak is likely to be from the drive shaft seals, a simple enough fix but the cost to repair should be taken into account when buying.
A clunking sound from the front suspension is likely to be the ARB drop links, an easy fix, but again costs should be noted.
Can be heavy on brakes, check discs and pads for wear. After a long run check the calipers are not sticking by touching each wheel, not the tyre. Check the heat is similar on both sides, if one is significantly hotter, the caliper is likely to be sticking and will need fixed.
Overall, very good cars/engine, just check carefully.

Had one as my first car. Check the electrics in the doors work, the looms are badly designed and the wires break.
The clutch will be stiff, the cable runs near the exhaust and dries out the lubricant, so I'm told.
Be careful in deep puddles, this may happen.......

The air filter housing is very close to the ground and will suck up water! I learnt the expensive way!
Never had major problems with mine, proved to be reliable.

I've got a 306 gti and since I've had it it's needed/needs the following:
Heater matrix (awful job)
Drop-links
Rear beam
Backbox
Dampers
Wishbones
Handbrake cable
Fix collapsed lumbar support
That's all in three months. They're getting on a bit now and need some TLC. Great drivers' cars though. D-turbo is the same with extra economy.
