Cracked alloy bellhousing

Took the engine and gearbox out of the Taz today. The bellhousing has quite a major crack in it which extends 1/3 the way around. Our Dave, who is an excellent TIG welder, will be able to weld it up properly but is it likely to last or it is a case of once it cracks its buggered.

Depends how severe the crack is Dave really - we've had ours welded up 2 or 3 times this year but has re-cracked through the season... I would say if possible to weld it while all bolted up so you're not putting anything under pressure on re-assembly... Worth a try though...

Is your bellhousing cast iron though Dave?

I would replace it anyway dave.
Not that expensive and when done its done.

drilled crack ends and a weld should be no probs to a man if your calibra, though.

I can only stick metal together, one wouldn't call it welding. Our dave will grind the crack out, root it, fill it, and cap it. Dont need to drill as the crack has gone to the edges!

No Dave, ours is ally - MT75 box so the bellhousing is integral to the box, hence why we welded it up.

Yeah i think ric wood wanted even more than that for theirs.. im sure the John Eales rv8-t5 bellhousing complete with release bearing is less than than..

I got hold of a gearbox bellhousing & release bearing from a Tuscan I will see if its possible to mill out another bellhousing to fit & maybe sell the tuscan housing

Dave, I seem to recall back in 2006 when Howard was running your car he had the gearbox or its bellhousing (don’t recall which) crack on several occasions during the season, first with the Type 9 then the T5. Might be worth checking everything is as aligned as it should be.
As an aside to that, I’m producing a bell housing adaptor for my engine swap so I can use the RV8 bellhousing without modifying it, if folks need I can look at other adaptors.

I have a spare housing that has already been welded up in a couple of places. That probably dates back to Howards days. The one that I am repairing has been on the car since I have had it and has always had a small crack in it until its recent "growth". I am going to install an additional bushed support below the bellhousing to see if it helps. IIRC don't Tuscans have an additional support below the housing?

Some do yes, but its mainly to stiffen the chassis and stop the engine and trans moving forward under braking.

Dave, as is stated some do, and some don't, but 44 is going to have one fitted soon,
