How do I check if a car for sale is genuine?

I've seen an advert for a VW Caravelle and the price seems too good to be true. I've emailed the vendor (private sale) to see if it is correct. If it is I want to go and see it. How do I check that the car is genuine, HPI clear not written off, etc?
