Im looking for a car that is easy to work on but that i can 'do up'. Some type of restoration project over the winter.

Suggestions? Im fairly good on the mechanical side but not too good on electrics or computers, so im guessing something a bit old in terms of technology. My thoughts at the moment are with an old land rover defender, series 1 etc.

Any other suggestions?

How about a Range Rover Classic?

Cheaper than most Landy's, more comfortable, bits just as cheap...

Mk 1 or 2 Golf GTi, if done up well will be a good place for appreciation in terms of value.

get an impreza with the bottom end gone, could be sold on for a profit or turned into an excellent track car, sell the interior etc. the engines are pretty easy to work on once you get them out of the car.

How much are you looking to spend?
Well, the budget is open ended really, but im hoping for a 'barn find' or something equally as knackered for a few hundred quid.

Couple of questions.

Do you have somewhere to work on the car (undercover, enclosed, with light and power?)

Can you weld?

a v8 is probably bigger than an entire cinquecento, perhaps have the engine on a trailer behind. laugh

I'm currently restoring an old mini. Parts are extremely easy to get hold of, in fact its well known that it is possible to build a complete mini out of new parts because you can quite literally buy everything new. There is also a superb owners community with many shows and runs throughout the year.

The cars are easy to work on, you can customize them as you please, and they are great fun! Highly recommended!
