Speedo????

Today the speedo on my 92 griff decided it was going to have a break.
Any pointers as to why it may take such a break?

And on the odd occasion ,when the cobra immobiliser has timed out and so the car is immobilised,if I turn the key and try to start it ,obviously nothing happens.
But when I turn the key back off the ignition and oil lights stay on and some of the gauges stay in position.
These all go off when I nudge the gear stick to the left.
Could this be the earthing connection under the centre console?

looks like the earth could be the common link.

the speedo also needs the earth to function. not sure of the earth routes, the speedo has its own earth but it may well return to the same point.

There is an earthing point underneath the centre console, its found on the drivers side underneath where the door release catch is.

maybe this has come loose somehow?

Although regrettably to get at it you have to get underneath the car to release the handbrake linkage to get the handbrake vertical so you can lift the centre console up... or so they say!

You may be able to get the console up high enough without having to undoe the Handbrake, realy depends on how far you handbrake travels though.
Not sure on a 92 but on mine (96) Theres and eathing bolt under either side of the console, and last time I looked they were in excellent condition, the only problem I can see is that they may work loose.
Theres two other earthing points that may be worth checking.

1) Engine to chassis strap behind teh Driverside front wheel.

2) Theres another one ( which caused my dash lights/indicators and dipped lights to flicker), which may also be the cause. Its the one that bolts the body to the Chassis just under the drivers side of the Radiator. You can get to it through the air intake with a Thin Socket deepening on what nosecone you have. I couldnt with my old NoseCone and had to cut a slot in the GRP just below it to get to it with an open ended spanner.

Saying all that though I would have thought you may have had problems with other stuff so maybe its the speedo packing up or the speed sensor??

Thanks for that , just got to get under it to slacken off the handbrake cable some time then.


Another question?
Are other griffs noisy at the rear?
I mean sort of suspension noises when the road isnt exactly smooth?

Bit of a knocking I guess.I have yet to get all four corners reset after a winter complete strip of each corner.
Shocks a bit hard or too soft?
By the way it has adjustable spax all the way round.

My '92 car has an earthing point on the left hand bolt that that secures the steering column to the underside of the bulkhead. Dunno what it actually earths without looking at the bible though. This is unlikely to be the problem area anyway as I doubt this connection would have corroded, and I'm sure you would have noticed had it come loose!
