Just checked the oil level on my diff. Level is fine, but when I took the fill plug out, there was a burnt smell. Is this likely to be serious, or should I just change the diff oil? Steve

Diff oil smells rancid at the best of times, but it wouldn't hurt to change it. Make sure you use LSD-compatible oil if the diff is a limited-slip unit.

For the Powelock diff, the Steve Heath book recommends Duckhams Hypoid 90DL (SAE90). Halfords doesn't stock Duckhams - what other oil can anyone recommend?

To clean the breather, do I need to take it off?

Cheers, Steve

Motul and Silkolene both do LSD oils. With the breather I'd get a piece of stiff'ish wire, bend it to the right shape, and have a prod with it in situ.

Hi Steve, I use Comma LSD oil and it works fine. Happy sprinting!

After yet more befuddled grunts and shrugs from the "assistants" in Halfords, I decided not to risk buying the wrong stuff from them. So flicked through some TVR mags and found Opieoils.co.uk (01209 215164)who provide discount to members. Great service - they knew what I was talking about and offered a few alternatives for LSDs. 25% cheaper than Halfords (including delivery) and the oil arrived next day! Maybe worth a look for other seeking discounted oil. Steve
