Hello chaps.

I have started to scout around for some 16"s for winter tyres (soo much cheaper than 17"s..). plus fancy haveing spare set. i might be daft and buy some new r90s for £450! but we'll see.. also i wondered can i go down to 15" on an r53?

anyway. on my travels through the internet i have seen some ads for second hand R56 cooperS brakes because people have upgraded to works spec. would these go on my r5**3** and would it take long/cost much do you think to get someone else to do it? and would it be worth it? let's face it the things wrong with the r53 are the runflats and the brakes... is this a relatively 'cheap' way to get a bit more braking oomph? presumably definitely stuck to 16"s with these brakes..?

(also reading through some other threads i am now not so worried about the 'ticking clutch'! and i fact i have done quite well because mine only started doing it 5k miles ago and it's defo due a new clutch soon anyhow (on 52k miles now).)

Putting stock r56 brakes on your r53 will make a big difference especially if you go ahead and fit some mintex pads. The r56 brakes are the r53 jcw conversion callipers just not painted red with a decal. As for the smallest wheels, you can run 16" alloys though I think only the 17" s spokes go over and then any of the JCW wheels.

You will need R56 brake lines for the front and that is all

Conversion wouldn't take long, if you said 2 hours labour max that would be easily done. I would give myself 30mins to do that change. You will need some brake fluid too, if you can afford to change it all go for some motal rbf600 you will be surprised how good the mini can then brake

Budget £100 to fit all in, anything more and I would say too much. (this is based on prices in the midlands and excluding the fluid)

that's ace. thank you.

so on the wheels - if i went to r56 brakes i couldn;t use any 16"s? but i could use my current 17" Bullets - right? (as stock the r56s run 16"s i thought hence a bit of confusion on my part..).

I have never come across the bullets on an R53 but since they come on the R56 anyway you will be able to fit them.

Any wheel used on the r56 will fit over the brakes, its only really a problem with 16" wheels from the r53.

Pictures confirm that 16" xlites fit over the r56 brake calliper, with just enough clearance.

I have seen them going for about £120 but saying that I managed to purchase a set of R53 JCW brakes for £180 a couple of weeks ago. Now more people are fitting the R56 BBK the R53 JCW brakes are not worth anywhere near as much as they once were

Good find though I think its too much, too much by at least £50 even with the rear callipers which I would advise you do not bother changing as they are the same stopping force 20% you only need the front.
