Aftermarket seat fitting in 964RS?
Discussion
Saw in Mr. Firman's profile that his GT3 Cup is fitted with a sparco Evo 2. Does anyone know whether the 964RS will accept a wider seat than the standard recaro item - which is a tad tight on the old hips! Recaro SPG is a no go for me, as I'm not built like a racing snake!
I presume i'd have to mount some side mounts directly onto the floor, but would be concerned about the possible fouling of a wider seat on the centre tunnel due to the narrow width of the car & the associated difficulty of ensuring the mounts are placed sufficiently wide enough. Any views/advice gratefully received. I would also want to mount the seat so it was as low as possible - potentially direct to the floor - to allow my 6'5" frame to fit (with helmet). I've had pax laps round the ring, etc, in a 964 RS OK, but would want slightly more room to drive one!
Also, where a car has a heigo/matter cage fitted, these often have a harness bar mounted directly behind the seatback - often restricing rearwards adjustment. Can anyone think of a way around this? Some roll cages have 'half harness bars' mounted between the diagonals (assuming the cage is triangulated from the top of the B pillar to the top of the rear suspension mounts in an X pattern).
Thanks in advance.

GT3 seats will fit a 993/964 with the correct mounts.
Go to seats then P93 section on:
www.carnewal-europe.com/main.htm
Also try:
www.recaro-seats.co.uk/
I'd go for GT3 seats myself........... (I had a 993RS and the seats were tight, the GT3 seats are much better in my GT2)

On the subject of head room Furgus you shouldn't really have much problem with the standard seat if you remove the optional seat padding, which lives below the leather covered seat cushions. Chances are this was in place when you had your passenger laps.
I'm also 6'5" and achieve a great driving postion with the standard seat minus the lower seat padding (velcro attached). I have the seat as far back as it goes (with cage) and this is fine. The secret is to get the steering wheel out of the way of your legs. I have a 90mm boss to bring the steering wheel out towards me, with Momo wheel. Works great.

Paul, are you 'of large build' (i.e. 'wide hipped'). The seat itself did have the lower seat pad removed as you suggest, but the side rails meant things were a tad tight (to say the least!)

Indeed. I have found that porsche steering columns have a very flat rake, so are tight on the legs. I too was thinking of eithwer a boss extension -as per your solution - or a removable boss. It sounds like this allows an acceptable driving position from your perspective.
When you bought the car, how did you find the test drive with the original wheel fitted? I presume this wasn't easy - or had you sat in a 'modified' car (i.e. with different boss) prior to purchase. I will probably get a car from Tom @ H&S in Germany, but want to ensure I can fit before making the journey & the purchase!
I can't drive one with the standard wheel. My leg gets stuck between the wheel and centre tunnel when trying to get from the accelerator to the brake. I'm very slim so don't find the seats too narrow. To give you some idea I'm only 14 stone and at 6'5" thats not a lot.
You shouldn't go far wrong buying a car from Tom, I know him well and deal with him a lot.

What type of cage do you have? Is the harness bar directly behind the drivers seat? Do you know if you can lower the seat on the seat rails at all?
I've heard that Tom usually describes his cars very accurately. Would you still recommend an inspection, even when buying from him? I know he has an excellent reputation to uphold.
thanks in advance.

I deal with these cars so have driven them with various cages, including the following setups:
Matter Full & Half cages (bolt in).
Heigo Full & Half cages (bolt in).
Clubsports with factory welded Matter.
Weichers "Le Mans" full cage (Welded).
I've not had a problem with any for leg room due to the cage restricting the seat. I've found the seat usually achieves its natural full movement. The seat rake can be adjusted by using 1 of 2 mounting holes at the front part of the seat. If the highest mount hole is used it can cause the seat back to hit the cage restricting movement very slightly.
If you have a cage that doesn't allow easy attachement of harness belts then I'd recommend using eye bolts mounted in the rear bulk head.
With regards to having Tom's cars inspected I'd say it's not really neccessary. However you need to be aware that this opinion is from someone who brokers his cars in the UK. So you may want to seek a more independent opinion.

Any suggestions guys?

Fergus,
I'm currently having a pair of SPG XLs fitted into my GT3 for the same reason - fine for a few laps round a circuit, but for travelling more than 2 hours - forget it! Having the work done at JZ, mainly because the Recaro mounts do not work/fit in the car.
HTH.
