Ok, what is everyone's opinion on necessary extras say in a new 2012 3 series.

Mine are as follows:

Metallic Paint
Leather
Split seats
Xenon
Pro Nav - yes I know its no better than a TomTom but the integration looks good.
Bluetooth

Nought else but still probably £3.5 k worth.

On my current 3 series I required the following

At LEAST a 330d, I don't believe in buying a 4 pot 3 series of any flavour and my particular flavour had to be diesel
Auto
M Sport
Professional Nav (purely for resale)
Xenons
Electric folding mirrors
Bluetooth
Leather
Sun Protection (nice but not 100% necessary)

If I was buying new I would also spec

Sunroof
USB
Heated Seats (one thing I miss on my current car)
Aux heater

Depends on the budget of course. For me the absolute essentials are nice wheels and upgraded HiFi.

Definetely Panoramic sunroof and non-black leather. I have Teracotta and it's superb in combination with the panny roof smile

I have, which i think should be specced on an expensive car,

Bluetooth
Pro Nav
Heated seats
Aux
Leather
Business/Pro HiFi

Coupe also comes with xenons / parking sensors and 335 has sports seats and i think extended lighting.

I also have 19s and rear tints which i don't class as necessary but seem to finish the car off nicely.

What I would have liked is the USB input and sometimes i miss a sunroof.

All I really need on a daily driver are:

Auto
Xenon
ipod interface
air con / climate
sports seats
sports steering wheel
Oh and winter pack with bum-warmers / heated washer jets. Once you get used to them on winter mornings there's no going back...

I was always sceptical about heated seats until I got a car that had them...as the poster above says, there is no going back!

On my 330D Touring (2009) I have:

Space Grey bodywork
M-Sport Auto (with paddles)
Sports Seats
Heated Seats
Panoramic Sunroof
Teracotta full leather
Professional Satnav
Adaptive Headlights (turn into corners)
Sun protection on rear screen
Blue tooth
Ipod/USB connector
I-Drive (new one with hard drive)

A very nice package.

Are you asking what people like, or what is necessary for easy resale?

Must admit to not giving a stuff about resale - we bought the car to the spec we wanted, not what someone else might want in 3 or 4 years time - its our car to our spec.
Plus its on pcp with a guarenteed future value so its not a concern
Personanlly think its madness to buy something for yourself and worry whether other people will like it in the future! smile

Some do, some don't – which is why I asked the OP to clarify what he meant!

Did wonder if the bmw pcp calculator would significantly reduce the gfv if you chose the most hideous spec possible?

I don't give a stuff about resale either - its a new car with desired options YOU want. Nobody else.

At resale you get stuffed regardless of options imho.

I dare say it would. In my old company car scheme, the monthly payments on a 3 series would shoot up if you specced it in flat red vs a metallic.

True, but idrive cars do fetch a nice premium to recoup some of the cost and are much easier to sell , autos too as they are mass market but other extras hardly make any difference.

Why does everyone wanted heated seats yet nobody wants a heated steering wheel?

I had heated seats in my Mondeo and there are heated seats in the E60. My E39 doesnt have them.

On a freezing cold winters day I get into the car, frozen and the one thing that I never think is 'Need to turn the heated seats on'. That part warms up on its own without faff despite the leather.

However, I end up driving down the road cursing how freezing the steering wheel is wondering why heated seats are more popular than heated wheels.

I wonder the same thing...but I've got a heated steering wheel! It's a cheap extra and for two or three months of the year bloody brilliant.
