Depending on the driver up to 2 seconds a lap at some circuits
The 996 cup cars are getting a bit old now.
997 cup car has the following as standard over the 996 Cup car.
More power around 20bhp
Stiffer chassis
Motec Dash with full data
Sequential gearbox
The suspension setup is much improved.
Lots of minor upgrades and improvements
Most 996 cup cars will now have upgraded suspension but the 997 comes with a good setup as standard
But watch out a 997 box will want a rebuild every 15 hours and a 996 around 30 hours.
But the 997 engine will last a bit longer between rebuilds.
Hope that helps

The 996 also has ABS unlike the 997 plus the 997 is much more difficult to drive on the limit. I have seen quiet a few drivers get in a 997 and not go any quicker than there 996!
Late 996's have multi adjustable dampers and Motec data logging as standard. Early 997's are not as powerful as the later ones either.

Oops sorry Neil I forgot about the ABS, its a big help for someone learning a porker...... and its mega in the wet.
And yes you will find many 996's have now been upgraded to almost the same speck as a 997 with regards to dampers and Motec.
And I agree a 997 is much harder to drive on the limit than a 996....... that’s why I am keeping my 996 for next year...... Still got a lot to learn about it never mind a 997
But I am getting better all the time, and yep a well driven 996 is just as quick as a not so well driven 997..... and 997's isn’t easy to push hard.
For a club series and someone new to porkers a 996 would be the best option every time.
But try to get a 2004 or newer and try to get one with Motron Dampers and Motec Dash...... the sequential is not a necessity to go quick.... but it helps, the down side is a sequential box is easy to break and expensive to fix.

Gearbox (996) 6k ish
Engine allow 12-15k ish
Driveshafts £1750ish each!!!
Porsche spec 40 hrs happily run to 60 have seen one late car with 90 and still going strong :-)
Normally the only other thing to go wrong is the driver :-)
Std fuel pumps arnt great so fit new every year and carry a spare.
exhaust headers will get tired after a while and are also expensive! Make sure you get a car with a quiet system as the rear silencer is even more expensive!
Wheel bearings, hubs and centre lock stub axles I would also recommend to change if unsure on there life.
Recommend fitting brembo front floating discs also cost a lot more but last even longer :-). No need for the rear std Porsche discs are fine.
Dont let any of the above put you of they are a great race car :-)
Almost forgot you will almost certainly need a couple of spare clutches until you get used to used to the car..... Clutches on a 996 degrade due to overrevs and heavy down changes but do save the engine....
