Has anyone have any experience of what the weather is typically like in late November at the Ring? I know it can be deeply changeable all year round and that it seems to be a law unto itself, and that it >could< be snowy, but an idea of what we're really, actually, properly likely to expect would be handy.

Anyone got any ideas/ experience/ horror stories?

You've answered your own question really. Could be sunny, could be snowy, could be both! Expect the unexpected.

yeah, I know that- the same could be said of most weathers in most places in the world really. What I'm trying to get to is does anyone have any actual experience of what it's typically like? I'm aware it could be anything, but there must be someone who can say 'well, typically it doesn't really start getting bad all the time until December'.

I'm due to be there on the 20th, and I've never been there this time of year.

I'm not expecting any great weather so it's just a curiosity thing more than anything. I guess if you're there for a 3 or so days, the chances of finding a dry day/window are all the better.

Well obviously the odds aren't great. The combination of very low temps, low angle of the sun, plus steep hillsides and trees means any dampness just stays all day. Oh, and the heavy mists that are sometimes around too. I'd assume something like 80% chance of a wet or at least mostly damp track.

Quite possible it could even be closed for snow or ice.

All that said, right now the webcam looks pretty good, and last Sunday did kinda dry off very gradually even if it took the whole day to do it. Hell I've even had a totally dry track right from the start of the day in early Jan so it's just pot luck.

Be extra careful off the line in the shady areas as even a clear sunny day in Nov will see the morning dew persist in those spots all day.

I've been there at all times of the year with my job. To be honest, I'm amazed how many times the weather can change in the same day let alone the same month.

Autumnal damp, with the possibility of snow.
If you are heading over, prepare yourself for a less car-related holiday.

Often go early Dec as a little birthday pressy to me and it's always been ok weather wise. Easter tends to be worse for snow.

In terms of track time it can be brill! No queues, closures, idiots etc.

weather forecast

I've driven there many times in November, you can have some glorious days, just be very aware even when it's sunny you will come accross slippy sections where the leaves get blown on track and the shade keeps the track wet, plus of course your tyres will be relatively cold.

It can be the best time to visit, especially during the week as you can find the track virtually empty all day.

I got a couple of sneaky laps in today. It was a little damp and there were a few patches of slippery leaves about. Hmmmm.

However the best thing about the ring at this time of year is that it is so quiet. There were some Dutch guys from Vauxhall there this morning but that was about it. On one lap I didn't come across one single other car. Felt a lot safer than the last time I was down in the first weekend of October which was like a stock car race.

Thanks for all your help folks, it sounds like it might be the best time of year to go, especially since the plan was to go on bikes.

Any ideas when will the weather be improved on a more-reliable basis? March?

March is still risky imo. April would be a better bet.

The last two winters have been particularly harsh, it was -6c the other weekend, I put my winter tyres on, and now it's 16c today.

I'm holding off fitting the winter wheels until the end of November. Going to squeeze one more day at the ring in first, hopefully.

Send a private message to member Adenauer and ask him.

He's a professional weather forecaster who lives right by the circuit and tends to understand all of the long term trends.

Remember as well that once the frosts start coming, there are parts of the tracks that never see direct sunlight in winter. I have been on a superb dry track with blue skies only to find a couple of bends with white frost all over them, deadly! Just take it easy on the first couple of laps, check the condition of the track, then if you're happy, hoon it!
