GM Shows Off Hardcore Corvette And Camaro Concepts

Track-focused 'Vette Z06X and Camaro SSX unveiled at SEMA

General Motors has released a pair of intriguing track car concepts at the SEMA show in Las Vegas - the Chevrolet Camaro SSX and the Corvette Z06X.

The Camaro SSX is intended as a showcase for new Camaro performance parts, and features a carbon fibre front splitter and adjustable carbon rear wing, carbon fibre body panels, extra brake cooling and freer-breathing engine induction, and tweaked suspension and brakes. Chucking away plenty of sound deadening and removing the rear seats completes the track-car makeover.

Like the Camaro, the Corvette Z06X is a track-focused concept, intended to show customers what they can do with GM's catalogue of performance parts.

"Racing is an integral part of Corvette performance and technology," says Tadge Juechter, Corvette's chief engineer. "This concept car represents a mid-point between our GT race car and the production Z06, prepared by the team responsible for the Corvette Racing C6.R race cars"

The Z06X is based on the Corvette Z06 with the 1LZ equipment package, along with the Z07 Performance Package and CFZ Carbon Fiber Package. This creates the lightest production Corvette and includes carbon ceramic brakes and magnetic ride control.

Other modifications include an adjustable carbon fibre rear wing, a polycarbonate rear window, roll cage, racing seat and safety harness, racing wheels, adjustable coil-over suspension, and a racing-spec cooling system. The radio, carpeting and sound-deadening material are also removed.

Both cars are finished in a low-gloss 'Icy White Metallic' paint.

I suspect this is a direct response to the Dodge Viper ACRX and have to say I would love one of the Z06X cars but will they be available or is it just a concept?

Katech Performance had the Corvette pics on their Facebook page yesterday and it does look good.....but is it GT4 / GT3 / GT2 or some other spec?

One of each please. Don't bother wrapping them...

Wonder what weight they managed to get the Camaro down to and what power output?
The Z06-X surely has to make limited production. What a track car that would make!

Although I like them, they look to me to be tricked out standard articles from their current range - ie not so much concept, more just natural progression...? No?

Rear wings on muscle cars look stupid. The end.

Love them, although given the standard cars inability to handle well and put down the power on rough surfaces, I think these will have to live on a race track, and a smooth one at that...... forget the ring.

So they threw a load of weight out and tuned up/upgraded the componants. Whats not to like!!!!! It will no doubt be fantastic in a heart pounding sort of way.

However i am not excited by this at all. I'm thinking noisy and fragile..........

The Vette is not a muscle car. End of. wink

(I agree, the Camaro would look much better without the wing.)

As for the other comment about smooth tracks and not the Ring, I presume he is unaware of the Z06 and ZR1 lap times there?
Or is he referring to the Camaro again?

I heard the Z06 actually tipped over at the ring through the first corner. This was mainly to do with leaf springs, America and a poor interior. True fact, right there.
