I was just wondering, are there any insurance implications for driving a decatted post 1992 car? For example, is the worst that can happen that they see it as an undeclared non-performance enhancing mod (like a sports exhaust or a after-market steering wheel) and just refuse to replace it/them+++ in the event of an accident/damage?

+++=come to think of it, my insurance company specifically excludes my exhaust from any claim anyway despite charging me £40 p.a. more for the privilege....

How do you define sports exhaust? If it has no performance enhancement then it's just a non OE replacement part?

I asked my brokers yesterday. They asked what the performance gains were and make, and then said it was ok.

I remember you asking the same question in march, the answer will always remain the same. Remember when i pointed out that the Capristo has a tag welded to it that said " Competition only"?
Try ringing your insurance company and asking them if a "competition only" exhaust on your street car will void your insurance.
I know of more than one 355,360 and 430 Ferrari that has been in a road accident. Then the owner has taken the car home on a low loader. Then he has wiped of the exhaust system for a standard unit, ready for the insurance investigator. One or two even post on here, i know them wink
Like i said just ring the insurance company and ask them, then ask about the straight pipes. You may be surprised at there response....i wont wink
Saying that, has any one noticed that some of the new Capristos no longer have the tag welded to the system, not hard to guess why. So clearly if yours has been made recently, you may be good to go. I have one of the first ones on mine.
With that said, drive that 355 safley Mario brother smile

Interesting. My Capristo doesn't have this tag (it's for a 360) - it was made in March 2006. Do you know when they stopped putting it on?

Get a set of Hyperflow pipes. Better than standard cats without teh MOT/insurance problems. You will have to notify the insurance company though.

There are also less brokers that will cover modified Ferrari's these days. I had a hard time getting cover for my modified 348.

Tubis say Competition only on them also, does this mean that there are dozens of Gallardo drivers driving around uninsured? I am waiting for a call back from my insurance broker to find out.

Yes it is interesting, clearly Capristo have removed this tab for a good reason.
Bellow are pictures of two Capristo system. One with the tab and the other recent model without the Tab.
As i have said on countless occasions its just like having a track day tabbed motorcycle exhaust on your bike. When stopped by the police you will get points on ya licence. That's why Capristo have been clever. Also i have noticed that other systems also have a similar tab.
When i used to own my 328 i bought a aftermarket "challenge" model exhaust system from The stainless steel company in Notts. I was stopped by a motorcycle cop after he heard me howling down the A38,. One of the first things he did was get on his hands and knees to look at the system. Because he could not find an incriminating tab, he asked me out right was this a street legal system.
That same day i spoke to Don who runs the company and he said that's why he does not engrave his systems. Out of interest, Don also makes systems for Ferrari specialists all over the UK )NC & Shiltec ect) for customers who want aftermarket systems.
Its all interesting information that i think we need to consider. There have been certain smart arses on PH that have said, that having whats deemed illegal parts on a car (in terms of getting points on license). Has nothing to do with having an insurance policy void. ROTFLMAO really rolleyes
It is what it is no matter how one dresses it up, its all about choice. Clearly Capristo got the message wink Buy a latter system or remove the tag.

If the parts are not road legal in the fist case then that is a different issue. I was refering to parts that are in relation to insurance, not specifically de cat pipes.
I think the racing use only is a disclaimer from the manufacturer to avoid any claims, also i may be wrong but i think this only applies to the loudest versions. Even if it had "powered by fairy dust printed on it" it doesn't necesarily mean anything in terms of legality of use or if it is a suitable replacement part for the uk, they are sold all over the world with the same branding where different rules & regulations apply.

I do agree if in doubt consult the insurance & manufacturer to confirm. However, most non factory exhausts are fully road legal and perfectly legitimate to replace the original with, there is always variation in products that are not from the original brand but there is no reason to avoid them because of this. No insurance company needs to be informed of replaced parts of equal quality to the original, they might try their luck on it, or only pay for rhe original part to be replaced if damaged, but ultimately if the part replaced was as stated above there is no case to answer.

Think of it this way. If you ride a motorcycle, you will know that if you ride with an after market system with a Competition only tag. At a road side check station, you will get points, and B your insurance company will not pay out if you have an accident because the system you have used is not to be used on the road. There for its not road legal.
Why are cars any different? Though to be fair we pays our money so we take our chances. There are countries in Europe were one cannot modify a car at all. But people still do.

My insurance company have told me that the 'Competition Only' tab is there for other less tolerant country's i.e. the Swiss. As long as it passes its MOT in the UK there is not a problem. There is no increase in my premiums.

If you ring this number and ask to be put through to the ROAD POLICING DEPARTMENT,0845 456 4567. You will be told that if you are stopped by the police and they notice the exhaust system has the tag. They system will be deemed illegal.
I have just had an interesting phone call with the friendly police officer not 10 minutes ago. She also said that more forces throughout the country are getting road side sound measuring devices. For an import the DB levels are 98-99DB, for UK cars the DB levels are 88-89 DBs. Anything eslse and your system is also illegal, tabs or not. Hands up who has an after market system that's not way over 100DBs. We should all be worrying.
So there's the number, ring them.

So in effect the garage that issued you with an MOT certificate would be also breaking the law. As long as your car had not been altered since having it MOT'd. Too many loop holes somewhere I would imagine.

Absolutely correct Peter, this is a grey area and a minefield.
Also regarding cats, one must replace cats with cats, after market or OE. Straight pipes are ...illegal, simple. Regarding the MOT, why do you think some spend an hour removing there straight pipes and replacing there cats just for the test? wink Then putting them back on after.
Don't get me wrong i have a 116 DB de-catted Capristo my self, one of the original guys to do so. The difference is that i know what i have done/doing, i dont bury my head in the sand hoping it all goes away.

I thought quite a few standard cars were above the 88-89DBs stated above; isn't a Scud around 105DB from the factory?

Read this and be even more baffled, how the hell does any super car pass the 74DB level? http://www.vcacarfueldata.org.uk/information/cars-...
