There is a slight diagreement in the office here.

Which of these is more visible in the dark to a car driver?

Black jacket with hi vis strips, along the lines of this:




Or a fluorescent jacket like this, but with no high visibility panelling.

Black with the vis stripes I'd say!

The florescent stuff really doesn't seem to show up at night unless you have the headlights fully on them. On the other hand high-vis stuff light light right up even if the headlights just glance on them.

Just minutes ago spotted a kid walking with mother at the side of the road in the country. Saw the hi-vis strips on the kid from a long way off as the headlights picked them up.

High viz stripes as well, the only difference would be at dusk where the bright orange would be better.

Ideally bright yellow or orange with High Viz strips

I have a winter one in black with the high viz stripes, when lights are on them its like someone is shining a bright light back, absolutely brilliant and just what i needed (nice and warm too).

I've got these, and despite being largely grey, really shine at night thanks to the reflective strips. So, yes I think you've made the right decision.

You need both really, the reflective stripes will show up great if the cars headlights are shining on them.

The problem is that there are lots of situations where this is not the case, such as cars emerging from side roads. So you need the bright colour as a backup.

I already own the black one with hi-vis but I also wear a groovy bright yellow hi-vis vest too. I do wonder about my back pack though, it's red with no reflectors so probably blocks out the hi-vis strips on my back. Can anyone recommend a decent hi-vis waterproof ruck sack?

You can get hi-viz covers for rucksacks or stick-on reflective patches.

I've seen them and almost bought one but my ruck sack is pretty old anyway. It was more of a temporary measure but I still use it 5 years later!

there's loads of hi viz rucksacks on ebay. i bought 1 off ebay for £15. it's waterproof and i cant fault it.
