My car is currently dead, so have asked my mother is she could insure me for a while so I can get to a meeting I have Friday and a job interview on Thursday, both of which take 15 minutes (ish) by car and about an hour on public transport... If not more.

So she has just called her insurer to get me on the minimum she could get was a month, and has cost £70 with £475 excess.

I am 20
Live in a decent area (of a not so decent town admittedly)
Uni Student living at home
Held license 3 years
2 Years NCB

The car? A 1 litre Corsa D Breeze.

Is that a ridiculous amount or am I being naive about how much insurance really is now?

To be honest you are lucky to have got a quote at all. Very few insurers will do short term cover for young drivers, and £70 ain't all that bad to be honest.

Taxi would have been less though.

my old man, (who is 60) had been pottering around in a Y reg punto for a couple of years. I think it's a 1200cc GLX or something like that.

Anyway, he went all boy racer a month back and purchased a citroen C3 VTR. So he sold the punto for 900 quid odd to a young girl (18 years old) from Harpenden. Apparently her mother paid for the insurance and it cost her £3,000.00 third party for the year.

Bonkers.

My first sixth months insurance was a grand, which was £400 more than the car. My next 12 months insurance was the same price.

This was in 1999, on a Vanden Plas 1300. Yes, very retro.
