996 Turbo Battery

Hi people,

I went to step into my car this evening, and the battery has died and she wouldn't start. I had not used the car for a few weeks prior to this and the battery was dead, so i charged it up (through the cigerette lighter) and got it going. Since then the battery slowly died again, leading up to today when it did not start (even after being charged for a good few hours last nite after signs that it was running low).

So it looks like a new battery is required, my questions however are as follows:

1. Whats the best battery to get? I do two short journeys a week so i don't want to be in this situation 6 months down the line!
2. How easy is the battery to change? Is there anything i need to watch out for (radio codes etc..)?

I need to sort out my plan of attack for tomorrow, so any help tonight would be most appreciated.

The general consensus is Bosch Silver top is the way to go. I got one the other day from Halfords for circa £120. I think you can get them a little cheaper on the internet.

The main thing when changing is to have the ignition on when you disconnect the battery. If you don't the alarm will go off.

My radio (PCM2) didn't need any codes putting back in.

Just had a similar problem myself with the battery running flat even after a good charge...changed the battery and all is well again.

I went for a bosch battery which was very kindly fitted for me by the boys at RSJ for a good deal less than £120.

I know car dealers can get a fair bit of stick on PH but Joel and the guys at RSJ were great including staying open late to wait for me while I got the AA to jump start the car.

Bosh silver everytime for me think I paid £65 for my last one from Andrew page, as above just keep key turned to the first click or the alarm will go nuts, I've never needed a radio code for my 2 turbos 1 was a 2001 and this one a 2004 so you should be ok and its a very easy job, you cold train the dog to do it the tool kit in the car has everything you need

Not quite - the silver top is also referred to as the S5.

No, Bosch silver come in S3, S4 or S5

The digit is the ammount of warranty in years S4= 4 year warranty

Um, if you look at the link you will the S3 has a black top, the S4 has a blue top and the S5 has a silver top. Therefore S5 = Silver top.

Although one of the earlier answers on this thread links to the same question I asked last year - I am still not clear on the answer.

I didn't get around to changing the battery last year but I want to now. However "get a Bosch Silver" doesn't actually tell me very much because the silver are simply a range of batteries and it doesn't tell me which one will fit the turbo.

Both Cosco and Halfords only list one type for 911s from 1973 on. The costco book seemed to be listing one which was only 74Ah - Halfords list the 096 which is 77Ah.

I'm sure the 096 is probably fine - but the turbo is supposed to have an 80Ah battery. So what are people doing - are all of you who have a Bosch Silvertop fitting the 096 / 77Ah one? Or have you found an 80Ah Bosch silver that fits and has the correct rating?
