I'm looking at buying a car that has no V5 present. the current 'owner' doesn't and neither did the previous. Would I be able to claim a V5 from the DVLA?

How can either of them have been the registered keeper if there is no V5?

Sounds like either a cat B or C write off. You need to check it's history before even thinking of going any further.

So neither current or previous owner has V5?

either do HPI check to make sure it is not stolen and get seller to request new one from DVLA

OR

Run away, find another car.

Is the car taxed ? - if you have no V5 or taxation letter - you cannot tax until the

V5 arrives. (it can cost £ 25 to get it) and takes 4 to 6 weeks

Avoid the car if you have doubts............

Is the car some kind of boy hood fantasy rarity? Otherwise why are you even entertaining buying something so bent?

To have no V5 that means that neither of the last two owners were registered keepers. What about the rest? How do they Tax it with no V5? Who does the reminder actually go to? Do you even know who the registered keeper is?

Handing over cash and taking the car doesn't mean anything if your name aint on the V5. There will be a reason why it isn't present and hasn't been for some time, and I very much doubt it'll be a good reason.

It comes up clean on an HPI check. I've currently got a low bid on it on ebay so I'll leave it at that based on the lack of V5 or indeed correct ownership.

ho-hum :/
