Useful and space saving or totally naff and horrid? If the former, does anybody have an recommendations? Our 18th century cottage is wonderful but bit cramped upstairs and I'm wondering if this is the answer.

I know I know. But I thought (hoped!) there might be somewhere who does nice old looking stuff rather than the stainless steel, gloss and mirrors!
Any other tips then smart arse?! wink

Can you not get a decent chippie to sort you out!

Bit of MDF and some beading to create panels etc?

With these things its not about price - lots of very expensive stuff looks naff too!

If you really want to go for fitted I'd consider finding a local cabinet maker - their prices may come as a pleasant suprise and you'll get a unique quality job that's fully to your specifications (no I'm not a cabinet maker!).

Fitted is the way to go in terms of storage but as you say, a bit naff and not so becoming in an old cottage. As said before, getting a good local carpenter to come in and price up may not be as much as you imagine and you get a good, bespoke service.

Hadn't thought of that - see, thats why I love this place. I should probably say now that I am a very inexperienced first home owner, so my questions will mostly be of the 'slightly above bloody obvious' persuasion!
Now to find a good local carpenter....

Wild guess - Suffolk?

Most 'fitted bedroom' pantechnicons seem to br stuck in the 1980s - but even if not, for every cubic foot of storage space, you lose a cubic foot of visual space.

How about one of those beds that opens up on hydraulic struts and you can chuck stuff in there?

Yes Suffolk! North Suffolk, about as north as you can get! Just purchased a gorgeous king size proper memory foam jobby bed so that won't be replaced for years! Our bedroom is long and thin, about 14 by 8 so thought maybe a fitted wardrobe up one end would be ok and not look so hideous. But I do have very bad taste!!

Call me Phil Connors... hehe

Oh well a fitted wardrobe would be fine, especially if it has mirror doors because it would make the room look bigger not smaller. You can easily lose 2' from 14'. (I thought you meant one of those 'over bed' things that look like bastardised kitchen units)

My house came with a triple mirrored wardrobe; it's great for those Freddie Mercury impressions and you get the room dusted as well. It doesn't look like a wardrobe at all, just a giant mirror.

Yes I lived in a house with those for a couple of months.
They are, without exaggerating, completely st in every respect.

Sorry to drag this thread back up, but rather than start a new one...

Looking at adding some wardrobes to our main bedroom. We have existing built in 1970s cupboard and plan to take them out and extend slightly to give a run of approx 2.6 metres. I've looked at quite a few places that sell sliding doors but they all seem really wobbly and have poor runners. When I did our kitchen last year I used Blum hinges and drawer fittings and I think this makes quite a difference to the end product.

Are there any bedroom sliding door firms that use Blum fittings or similar and that have solid doors that don't flex like the ones I've seen? Looking for kitchens last year found loads of places on line, but bedroom stuff seems hard to find unless you want something that looks like it came from the 1970s. We like modern clean lines and there seems little about that is modern looking or well made. frown

PS. The existing freestanding furniture we have came from Ikea 13 years ago but I remember it was too tall for the room and I had to cut each piece down which was a PITA. Looking at Ikea now they still don't seem to sell stuff that would fit without the pain of cutting it about...haven't they realised that UK houses aren't that tall inside??

EDIT: To add that Berkshire area is where we are based, though I travel around the South with work if suppliers don't mind non local delivery. Something like this:

We do a lot of fitted furniture into older cottages - generally speaking solid timber (oak) works very nicely in a traditional design.

We also do the super modern high gloss, aluminium, glass designs - including sliding doors.

Old school - you dont accept pm's! We can supply what you are after, if you fancy contacting us. Either supply only or supply and fit - have vehichles up and down the country most of the time.

Blakeatron, thanks for the reply. However, I see you are up in Cumbria, so a bit of a trek to come to see your products. Having looked at a few lately and this afternoon I'd really need to see them in person. I was kind of hoping more for recommendations off existing customers if there are any on here that have bought similar in my area.

PS. I didn't enable PMs on here as I got too many on some other AV forums that I post on and another Mk2 Escort one I'm on I keep getting unwanted PMs about buying my car.
