What car, cheap eco auto, pref low miler

As the thread title, I'm after another car that I can leave in the Uk for my folks to use and I can use when I'm in the country.

It should be cheap 1-2k, economical so prob a diseasal, age is not an issue but finding an autobox is for my old dear.
So what should it be, i simply couldnt come up with any ideas for a derv auto'.

Please don't make me give in to my mothers demands for a smart

I did say that I have to able to drive it myself - the only place I'd want to drive that micra is into the nearest tree ....

Shirley you can get a half decent car for the cash? Considering my e39 528 is only worth 2k at best, surely the budget should allow for something reasonable?

Having to be an Auto makes a huge difference to what's available.

You can pick up a Mondy petrol auto for your budget but it won't be cheap to run with both Tax & mpg higher than the manual/diesel.
Ditto for a 5 series/A6/E class etc..
