E39 driver side wiper broken

Hi chaps, anyone any experience with a single wiper dying on an E39?

I just nipped out and had to make a sharp (but not emergency) stop. When I pulled away the wiper was on slow intermitent and the driver side just died. It got half way up, clattered into the other one and went down, never to return. Fortunately I got it home but the wiper is dead as a dodo. There is no resistance in it either, can be moved by hand.

I'm no expert but it feels more mechanical (linkage etc) than electric. The passenger side wiper is working just fine on all settings.

Any thoughts?

same thing happened on mine a few months ago - turned out to be mechanical link came undone - local garage sorted for half an hours labour.

I would of sorted it my self, but i couldnt work out how to get to it easily.
