mmm what 4wd car?
Discussion
need some ideas guy, want a new car, a 4wd one, but has to have a bit of poke about it, and relitivly cheap too (£2.5-£3k), reliable and not so much good but just not crazy on fuel, ok i was thinking the likes of, celica gt4(st205) mabie a scoob, and like the idea of an audi a4 1.8t-150 ph/hp whatever but only if tunable to a more respectable output, and im pretty stuck at that, any ideas? thanks
Why?
There are lots of potential reasons with different answers.
I had, and greatly enjoyed, a Legnum VR4 which perfectly fulfilled its role as a versatile load lugger with a bit of poke and was hugely entertaining in the process. Bit of a dipso though, high teens were much more easily achieved than mid twenties when it came to mpg.
Its 2wd replacement is faster, nimbler, more economical(!) and just as sure footed in nearly all situations...

This all depends what you really want from the vehicle and what you want to do with it tbh.I'm a huge Celica GT-Four fan, it is one of my fav rally cars due to being the last good looking rally car that was chosen because it was a coupe and not some tarted up hatch.
While I think UK spec GT-Fours will run on 95 RON, I personally wouldn't run any turbo motor on anything less than super unleaded. So factor this into your fuel costs and costs per mile.
e.g.
it means the additional cost per litre cost you about 2mpg in money terms. So a car doing 24mpg on superunleaded is pretty much the same cost as a car doing 22mpg on 95 RON.
Most turbocharged AWD cars will not be great on fuel, budget for low 20's average and you won't be upset that way.
Now back to the question, what do you want from such a car?
Not all AWD systems are the same, some will be far different to drive and some are much more affective in slippery conditions.
A pre 2003 manual Jag X-type 3.0 V6 would be a different and refined choice.
Impreza, early JDM Evo, some other Subaru or something VAG'ish would be the likely candidates.
There are older options, maybe an Escort RS2000, Sierra Cossy (2wd most likely though), XR4x4, Cav/Calibra Turbo.
BMW did some xi AWD vehicles over the years, but most not sold in the UK, but you might still find one.
Either that or start looking at 4x4's, LPG V8 powered Landy, 4.0 litre Jeep, 2.5 V6 Freelander. Won't be as fast as a Celica turbo, but arguably capable of being as fun.
thanks for the replies, only realy want a 4wd because of the upcoming conditions and am only looking to have the car for no more than a year, always liked the idea of a scoob but a friend had on and he said they not that good, something about not getting uel to some cylinders or the likes and ment to be just rediculus on fuel, and i was under the impression that any at around 2.5k would be dying( is this right), so was leaning towards the gt4 as there pretty reliable and apparently good for around 300bhp with just a remap exhaust and induction kit, i like the looks too, but never had a turbo before so dont know the score, im used to big v6's and v8's just want to see what the following is all about, and dont like getting humped by the occasional starlet in whats ment to be a supercar lol

oh is the vag 1.8t (150) pretty much the same engine as the tt with 225 bhp just with another map? like the idea of the audi but realy want a car over 200 bhp, thanks
The 180 is similar to the 225 when mapped while the 150 wont get as much power after a remap. You seem to want a Celica GT4.
Buy it or you will always regret not getting one, they are reliable, fast enough, comfy and I think they look great. Carlos Sainz eat your heart out type thing.
Just going down your favourite B road with that bonnet vent in front of you and a big spoiler behind you will make it all worthwhile.
You will regret not owning one. If you buy an Impreza of Legnum or Legacy or so on yes it will be fun, but it wont be a GT4. Do it!

I am reasonably certain its a different turbo and a different map - experts please correct me.In terms of 4x4's mrs Blue has a Subaru Outback with a 3.0l 6cyl boxer petrol engine. Its quite quick and very smooth, but not cheap to run. Oh and its excellent in snow with its all season type tyres and good on a muddy sloping field towing a horsebox
